rechamber factory tc barrel vs. new mgm barrel ?
« on: February 12, 2010, 04:38:51 AM »
i have a tc contender 17hmr barrel that i could have rechambered to 17fireball and have about $250 in it, or for $350 i could buy a new mgm barrel.   would the mgm barrel be worth the $100 more to sell the factory barrel and go that way?

I do not know this answer right off, is the twist of the rimfire proper for the new cenerfire? If not then you have to go with the new manufacture.

TC uses 1:10 for all of their 17 caliber barrels, rimfire or centerfire.

IMO it comes down to your primary requirements for the barrel.   Is shot placement important enough to you to want to hit exactly where you want to, or is close good enough?   Rechambered factory barrels generally shoot quite well if the barrel was "true" to start with.   Custom barrels mainly gain their edge by being made out of premium quality blanks with the extra benefits that allows to be built into them, so they usually shoot better than factory barrels.

As a long to very long range P&V hunter I've always bought custom barrels to get the most precise shot placement I can get at those extended ranges.
YMMV

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

only accurate rifles are interesting right?   i want and expect it to be really accurate but the stock tc barrels can usually be made to shoot really good, so as long as the rechamber is done right i was hoping it to be good.  but like you said, the aftermarket barrel is likely to be better.  it could be a gamble with the rechamber but should be a guarantee with the new barrel.

If you spend the money to rechamber your 17 HMR barrel and have $250 in it, you will probably end up with a barrel that not many people will want to buy when you wish to sell it unless you let it go very cheap.  You will certainly not get $250 out of it unless you find a really uninformed sucker.  In my opinion, you would be MUCH better off selling your 17 HMR barrel any buying a new MGM barrel.

Custom all the way. As has already been mentioned if you decide to sale you will recoop much more if not all of your money. Plus I like the look of it being stamped properly.

these reasons are kink of what i was thinking for going with the mgm.  i suppose it would be better to suck it up and spend the extra $100.

Never owned an MGM barrel, but have had a few Bulberrys and would take them any day over a T/C barrel, especially one that has been rechambered.

Go with the MGM barrel, I own 5 of their barrels and have not been disappointed. Likewise I also own barrels by Bullberry and the old VirginValley Shop, all are excellent barrels. That is where I would spend my $$$$'s. Sell your HMR barrel and put the $250.00 that you would have put into it and get the barrel the way you want it, ie: contour, finish, twist, etc. and don't look back.
