Hot soapy water, the hot clean water, then TC Bore Butter.  I apply another shot of Bore Butter in mid summer just to check for rust and lube the barrel.

In the field I use a mixture of 1/3 murphy's oil soap, 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide, and 1/3 rubbing alcohol.  Be sure to oil after because it gets it very clean.  At home hot soapy water....

Same here Ricktile66... MOS, HP and alcohol.  Keep it in an old pocket size spray bottle for the range and wandering.  Nice to know I'm not alone.

FWIW, hydrogen peroxide is a corrosive to steel/iron.

It may be corrosive.  However, so is BP.  It cleans the barrel extremely well in the field and as long as you give it a coat of oil afterwards I have not had a problem.

I tried some stuff from Dick's called muzzle magic made by birchwood caseys and it seemed to work well for the cleaning end of it.It was for pyrodex and blackpowder guns.Has a pink tint to it and thin like water and smells like rubbing alcohol.I noticed residue on the drum area of the barrel and it came right off with a wipe.I ran it up and down the bore with the jag til the patches came out clean and dry. Then gave it a good swabbing of rig universal to store.I am gonna keep an eye on it to see how it works,I am new to blackpowder. I was using pryodex rs in my gun it's a percussion cap model.

Run a rig patch in it about every 3-4 days until you get a feel for how your process and goo are working for you. Its a scarey thing to think it is OK and run a patch in a few months and get a rusty colored mess out.

Alcohol will eat the finish right off your stock.  Stick with Windex.

Then they don't have period finishes.  Must be poly or epoxy.

Not only will it pull a BLO or varnish, once through that it will leach the stain.

as for the old timers the barrels were made of iron not steel. steel does not need to be seasoned like iron[iron cook wear].cold water will work just as well as hot but very hot water will help dry the barrel out fast then just oil.windex does the same thing that water does it breaks down the salts so they can be flushed out.

Isnt Windex, and other commercial 'glass cleaners' a mix of ammonia, alcohol, water and dash of detergent?
I agree it works pretty well as a BP solvent, but I dont think the name brand is any better than cheap generic.

Ask 100 BP shooters what to use to clean a muzzloader, and you'll get 100 different answers. (Well almost)

On half stock rifles I take the barrel off and pump with hot soapy water, dry, one patch of WD/40, then dry patch, and use a good gun oil, or bore butter. Like GB.......No problem with flash rust, unless you wait too long to dry, and that ain't no big deal! It comes off easy.

The 3,3,3 mixture of Murphy's oil soap, hydrogen peroxide, and rubbing alcohol has always worked for me. Doesn't freeze at the range in the dead of winter either. I use it to patch swab the barrel when needed between several shots with no bad results. Even get it on the blue and the stock without any problems, but wipe dry immediately too. To lessen lead fouling, I've found if I run a nitro card on top of the charge it helps a lot. I shoot fffg Goex and use hot soapy water, hot clean water, WD-40 and finish with Bore Butter on a patch for storage. Always stored muzzle down.

Not saying it's the right way, just the way that has worked many winters for this ol' coyote.

Seriously, those two liquids are both very good BP solvents. The old buffalo hunters would often pee down the barrel of their sharps or rolling blocks to both cool the barrel and soften powder residue.
