Got regrets about having kids?
« on: February 12, 2010, 11:40:36 AM »
Do you ever regret having kids?

I'm ambivalent. I spent the best years of my life raising these excellent people, but I missed a lot too. And for what? I see no benefits ahead from all this effort.

Best thing I ever did aside from marrying the wife.  Raised two wonderful boys.  One is career Navy, the other is in his thrid year at UAF.  The4 one going to UAF is planning on going into the Marines aftrer he graduates.

And how else would I have gotten my three grandchildren?

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Have a fantastic Christian daughter that has given me two fantastic Christian grand kids. Absolutely no regrets.

It's the only thing I have ever done that is really worthwhile.  They were all home for Christmas, and I remember marveling that their mother and I brought all this into being.....

None what-so-ever.   I have 2 great kids that my wife and I are raising now, and believe me I am aware of lots of things that not able to have and do because of being a father (still haven't gotten that motorcycle, but still hopeful  ;D ;)   ).  I have plenty of regrets in life.  A big one being the courses of study I chose and a career path that I am hating right now.  But when I think about if I could go back and do things differently, I realize that I probably wouldn't have the wonderful wife and children that I have now. And they are worth more than any benefits that I am supposedly missing out on.

Hang in there Burntmuch, things will surely improve when the grandchildren came along.  I sold all my guns and about everything else when my girls were in high school and college.  Gave up hunting almost.

Now since they are grown I've bought a bunch of stuff again, and am currently giving it to my grandchildren.  I finally got old enough to realize they matter more than stuff anyway.

I am a glass half full type guy. I have no regrets what so ever - I have been married for nearly 36 years and have two wonderful children. Three of the best things in my life. Do I worry about their future - you bet I do....but they are the future and they along with other good young people are going to shape it their way. Like I said no matter how bad it gets, I think we can do better and we always have. Life is a pendulum - it swings one way, then it swings back. No matter how bad it is - it will change and get better as long as people stay positive and work hard. Both of my children work hard as does my wife and myself. There are plenty of others that do too. Right now the pendulum has swung to the left, but I feel it starting to swing to the right - as it always has.

My family is the best thing to ever happen to me. Been married 41 yrs and had 2 great daughters. My oldest passed away about 4 years ago. That was the toughest thing ever. If you ever have doubts about whether you should have had kids just remember they are precious indeed. You will never be the same if they are forever gone. Thankfully I have my younger daughter and a grandson who live with us.  Never take them for granted.

All the hardships I've ever endured and all that I'll ever endure were and are worth the first time I laid eyes on my granddaughter.

As I type this, my 14 month old grandson is asleep in my oldest daughters bedroom...The wife and I are keeping him this weekend because my daughter is smart enough to know it is Valentines Day weekend and her and my son in law need a weekend together...

Now, my dad died when I was 20, so he never saw one of his and mom's 15 grand kids...My grandson was in surgery last year...The week before Christmas he had his aorta cut in two and spliced back together to correct a pinched area...His first 3 months or so were rough but you sure wouldn't know it now...He is 32 pounds of chattering, into every thing, hard to keep up with little boy...

Now, I have 3 daughters...I have 2 through college and married, all within the past 8 years...The youngest is 18 and a senior in high school, she has already been accepted to 3 of North Carolina's colleges...

They are all great...I'm flat broke, the economy sucks, my business isn't doing well...I have no idea how I'll pay off college and wedding loans...But, no I have no regrets about having 3 beautiful daughters....

No regrets.  Three boys, all moved out and on their own.  Now one grandson and another grandchild on the way.  It was a struggle sometimes, but worth it, now they stop over and open the door on the fridge and just stare in there same as they used to, except now after they eat my food they go home.  ;D
Grandsone is 2.  Does whatever I tell him but doesn't listen to his mom too good she can't understand why that is.  ;)  "Pa-Pa" laid the law down a couple times while baby sitting, never a problem with that boy in my house, and he runs to pa-pa first before anyone else.   Got big plans for the first grandson, cutting and splitting wood, mowing the lawn, can't wait till he gets bigger.

I agree......I never understood how God feels about us until I had Grandkids.

Zero. I never gave kids a moment of thought or time before mine. Seeing your kid do something is like seeing yourself do it. Times 10. Good or bad. Great experience.

No, I do not regret having my son he will be 6 months old this friday the 19th.  Now when I see something I really want all I tell my wife is its for Gavin when he gets older ;D ;D.  But back too the question no I do not regret it at all and hopefully 1 or maybe 2 more someday. It has been a great learning experience so far and I really do not know anything so theres lots more to come.  Bushnell

Ours are not up and out yet, but we have a beautiful, intelligent, damned independent, 12 year old girl and a 4 year old hell-raiser who I'm sure will keep us up late for years to come with his shenanigans. We waited 6 years to have them after we got married and I think it helped us appreciate them, especially after my wife got Epilepsy in between the two births. I'm more concerned about the lousy world I brought them into and what they will have to deal with in the future.

No regrets.  One in training to fly an F-16 and the other is getting ready to become a teenager.  I do worry about the world that they are living in but I think that has alway been the case for parents throughout history.  They both like to shoot guns and one hunts with me so all is good.
