Barrel Fit for a Rem 600
« on: February 12, 2010, 01:22:49 PM »
I've been offered a 300 Sav barrel from a Rem 722. Will it fit my Rem 600 OK?

Remington barrels are not usually interchangable unless you happen to get lucky. The threads are the same but the shank length and headspace dimension will likely be different.

If it will screw on you can adjust the headspace by adjusting the thickness of the recoil lug, several thicknesses are made and you can shim them or thin them down to make the headspace come out right.  Larry

It's not "OK", in the sense that "OK" is a "drop in" fit.

The standard Rem 600 thread is 1-1/16" x 16 tpi.

The standard Rem 722 thread is .885" x 16 tpi.

IIRC, the thread OD's are the same, 1.050".

IF the thread OD's ARE the same:

Then, the threaded section on the Rem 722 barrel's shank is not as long as needed to fit a Rem 600 action, w/o further threading - which may/may not be doable, depending upon the contour of the barrel in the area of the chamber reinforce..

Additionally, the headspace will have to be checked, and might need correction.
Too little headspace isn't too bad, as a little chamber reaming/deepening is all that's needed
- but -
Too much headspace will require setting the barrel back enough (and adding more threads so the chamber will move further within the action when screwed in) to eliminate the excess headspace.

The NRA gunsmithing book shows the 721-722 both having the same thread diameters at 1.040 inches, however the length of the threaded shank plus the extension is different. I would expect the 600 is different still. This will however allow the fitting of the 722 barrel to the 600 action. Fitting will be required of course and assuming the caliber of the 600 was in the 308 family headspacing should be prtty straightforward.. Of course while the 300Savage is a fine round the 308 is a much easier to find caliber and I prefer it's longer neck.. I'd just fit the barrel and open the chamber to 308Win. The 600 was originally chambered in the 308 and it makes a fine deer rifle. Good luck..
