Just an update.

The .357 is out of service.  Missed out on the .45 Long Colt.

Bought a .40 S&W semi auto.

Don't think this is an effective bear round but it will get me used to shooting a pistol, get the fundementals down so I am in better shape to get something bigger later.  Still have all summer to practice.

A 10mm whould be OK but you are right the 40 is not a bear backup.
