First Handi Rifle
« on: February 13, 2010, 08:24:53 AM »
Hello all,

I have been interested in the Handi rifles for quite some time now. Ive handled many and always thought I would pick one up "someday". Well...today is that day. I want to evetually get 223, 357 and 12ga (wish I could get 22lr/WMR) barrels for it, but for now, I am just exited to try it out (soon as it gets here). Check out the link below for pictures.

Regards,

Josh

Welcome Josh, congrats!!  If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and spend lots of time reading in the FAQs and Help sticky, it will improve your Handi experience immensely.  ;)

I have had several, but never shot them. I always thought they would be junk. When I got my last one  (243) I shot it, and was amazed at how well it shot, and it is now one of my favotites.

Good looking rifle. It has some very nice grain in the wood. 7mm-08 is one of the calibers I have always wanted to try. Good luck with it.

I have wanted to play with the 7mm-08 for a while now, this should be fun. I've had one 308 in the past but other than that, all my hunting rifles have been 06 or magnum based cartridges.

The 7mm-08 was the first Handi in my collection (sold the other first before the collection started :'( :'( :'( :'(), but the father in law just gave me an old 30-30 and 22 Hornet. Both have the straight grip stocks and light barrels. I think they were produced in the 70's, but I will have to check the SN's.

Anyway congratulations and enjoy. Everything I have read on here is that they like the 139 or 140 grain bullets and really like the Remington Core Lokts in 140.

Thanks for all the great replies. I have a couple questions...first, in general, do ya'll find the weaver rail supplied with the barrel to be of sufficient quality to hold a 2-7x33 or 3-9x40 scope in place? Second, what rings come recommended for this application? Ive had/have many ruger rifles and love their supplied rings. In the past I have used Warne Maxima and Talley lightweight as well as Leupold with great success. Warne and Leupold do make steel Weaver style rings but both are fairly heavy, Talley doesnt make em at all. Any light weight Weaver style ring recommendations? Anyone running the Leupold Riflemans?

Josh Walker

I'm comfortable with it, I did/do the "fitting" job that Tim describes in the faq's

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,88476.msg534508.html#msg534508

Only I started with 320 going to 400 then the crocus cloth, then I put a drop or two of blue locktite under the rail as well as the screw holes. It oozed out well and I just wiped it off.
Rings depend on the scope used, it's all about getting clearance for the rear objective and the hammer. I found the Weaver Tactical at my local store fit the scopes I use for a proper hight for my veiw and still cleared the hammer without modification,,scroll back and read a few pages, there was a few topics on scopes recently, with lot's of info and photo's.

I put the quad lock extra high weaver style on my 7mm-08. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart.

I use Weaver med. rings and the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32.  The Weaver supplied scope base is fine as is.

You can get away with the weaver quad lock low rings with that scope. I have them on tracker II 12ga and 44 mag

Did they discontinue the lows? I can only see med, high and extra high...

I THINK I tried the mediums with my 2-7 Leupold and had to use highs in Quad lock. I still have the meds. hanging. The good thing about the Quads is you don't have to destroy the package to get them out. YET! I'd buy each and return the one that you can't use. I have one spare of each and am ready to mount one. I keep at least one on hand. Good Luck
