Back again...tang sight & trigger guard questions
« on: February 15, 2010, 09:28:17 AM »
Since I haven't gotten one yet, a couple of questions about Handi to help me decide on which to get first, then add to.

First, Anyone ever mount a flip up tang sight on the wrist?  How do you attach it to the action that doesn't have an extended tang?  Sight recommendations?  I have done it to Win & Marlin myself. Add an extended tang? Ideas?

Second, how do you mount the fancy Hawkin style trigger guard on a straight wrist Handi?  Any tips?

Someone's done this I'm sure, just couldn't find a 'how-to' in the FAQs.

There's a report back a page  by chas that just mounted a vernier sight on his BC, if you look in the long range sights for the BC and Target link in the FAQs, you'll see Handirifle's website link where he had Lee Shaver add a false tang to his BC frame.

You dont need a tang (and neither did Springfield with the Officer's Mdl. Trapdoor) for a tang sight. You can mount it on the wrist, inlet it into the wrist, or inlet a 'false tang' if you just must have metal for it to screw into.
The important part is to have it not be crooked left to right (or windage will change with elevation changes) and the staff needs to be mostly 90 degrees to the barrel at the most used elevation (or the aperture will get egg shaped and fuzzy). A thousand yard gun with the eyepiece way up will need a different staff angle than a 200yd gun.
If you dont like wood screws you could drill and epoxy in inserts for 8-32 or even 10-32 screws (available at well stocked hardware stores in the 'Jansdorf', or other name, bins).
The 'new' Marbles makes a tang sight for Handi's and the BC (different part #s due to the wrist angle) with windage and elevation that will make a very nice hunting and casual target sight. See Buffalo Arms.com for it

The Marbles tang sight is one of the sights listed in the FAQs, here's a previous discussion on wrist mounted sights.
