My hat is off to Green River Wyoming

I have 3 sons who live in Green River, Wyoming. Every time I go over we take a few hours out to go to the City Park and do a little shooting. This time I took my TC Contender in 30-30 and an old Marlin 336 in 30-30.

The City Council of Green River, in its wisdom has created a geat little 500 yard shooting range complete with a covered fireing line and shooting benches. There is a sign that askes the users to be safe and please don't litter. There is sufficient garbage disposal for shot up boxes etc.

I have lilved my whole life in the west where guns are in evidence everywhere and everyone has one, but I have never seen a city with the guts to sponser a shooting range within the city limits. My hat goes off to Green River, Wyoming.

I would Love to see something Like this in the east..  It's getting harder and harder to Find Nice ranges.

Hey Sixgun-
I was match director in Green River in the ealry 90's. It was a much different place then. We had sections of carpet for shooting stations during the IHMSA matches, sometimes laying in water puddles, sometimes ice. The Sweetwater County Rifle and Pistol Club had a lot to do with creating the berms, setting the rails for the targets and policing the area. We did have a garbage can. That was before the City annexed that part of town. It belonged to FMC, a huge trona mine just west of town, and included some 600 acres, if memory serves. After FMC dedicated the area to the city, the benches were built and later came the roof. I would take a big tarp and tie it off on the west end of the roof structure to protect from that constant wind while load testing. Made a big difference shooting in inclement weather.

We left in 2002, and I have yet to shoot at a better range. I still have one kid left in Rock Springs and one in Laramie, though I put 4 kids through the Green River school system. Thanks for the memory.

Our range in Shoshoni is about 5 blocks from the post office. Well maintained by the local rec board. It's not on city property but BLM land.

Just an FYI- There is a 22 range in the basement of the Monroe Middle School - and a Junior Rifle Club! yea, guns on the schoolgrounds!!! Only in Wyoming! Gotta love it!

I do have to add to this that my grandson, who lives in Juneau Alaska, took his Hunters Ed class in school.  They got school credit for the class but they made them do the walk around with the guns out in the parking lot.  They didn't have fences to climb over, in the school halls.  Maybe there is some hope.

AMEN! Thanks for that. Proper to note some resourceful educators getting the bigger picture and not yielding to the "no guns on campus" mindsets.
I never went to a school with a fence to keep kids in/perps out... but I know a lot who have. Praise the Lord I never lived in that environment.

I took my 1st trip to Wyoming this year, my wife has an aunt there, near Cheyanne.  Near in midwest terms means within 100miles.  They had deer in their fenced back yard when we arrived.  They left and were replaced by turkey at mid day.  They also had pronghorns all around the ranch, her husband is a ranch foreman and she's a hair dresser/barber.  I could get used to that kind of country.
