« on: February 15, 2010, 01:16:51 PM »
i noticed that wal mart has bags of onion bulbs on sale. the directions say plant between fall and spring.that tells me alot lol! when can i plant these bulbs? we are still getting freezing weather here, will that effect them or will they endure and grow when the time is right?kinda a newbie to onions, so any help would be appreciated.

I plant my new bulbs the second week in May, cause that's the absolute earliest the ground is tillable in Wyoming. But I have some special spanish onions, don't really know exactly what kind they are that I planted 2 years ago, and am still getting onions from them. I got them in a "clump" of onion bulbs, from a nieghbor.

I don't have any in rat now but normally would by this time. I seem to recall you are in FL aren't you? If so now is fine.

It depends on the type you have.  If you are putting in long day onions, they may not develop much until the daylight gets to more than 15 hours of sunlight a day.  If you're in FL, you may be better than in Ohio, but here , we are still getting sunset about 6:15, so only about 10 hours a day.  Consistent freezing temps will damage the tops, but they do tolerate cold, and some frost, and tend to be better tasting if they can grow during the cooler months..

It also depends on what your are planting, seed, sets, or plants.  Here is some info that may help...

Remember this is for a northern type garden, but the general info should be applicable to both.

I planted or should say mudded some in one time when we had a thaw eairly in the spring.Right after that we got a big snow storm and they were covered with snow for several weeks. When it finally warmed up they all came up and I was way ahead of the game for a change. The onion plant will take alot of cold weather and as long as you have sufficent moisture you can plant them for extended periods to have fresh green onions for a long period of time. You can also plant some walking onions and they will be the first thing up in the spring.

In Delaware, I will be planting around the 17th of March along with peas. We have purchased around 900 sets and I'm lucky to have a wife and kids that will help with the garden. We still have snow and more is possibily coming tonight.

Whatcha mean too early. I've been eating those "Remington" green top onions for weeks now. In fact it will soon be time to plant another batch.

I live in northern Missouri about 20 miles south of the Iowa border. We planted our onion sets the first day of April and the plants the 17th of April. We have been eating them for about a week now. Also Radishes, Lettuce, and spinach. all of those plants like cool weather and can handle a light frost.
