Am I going to die?

I stuffed 16 grains of Trail Boss powder beneath a 325 cast bullet.  Afraid to shoot it in my BC.  Any experience with that much TB?

Look at load tables. Trail Boss has a law of diminishing returns. A couple more grains of powder occomplishes very, very little in terms of velocity/energy.

Did it compress the powder? IMR says you shouldn't compress Trail Boss, from what I've read it creates sudden pressure spikes.
Just checked the IMR reloading site and it says 16 is the max for 385gr cast, you will be fine. You only gain 100fps between 14 and 16 with 385gr bullets. I just throw whatever dipper is in between. I shot 50 of 'em last outing, they're nice plinking rounds. Now 300gr JHPs at 2400fps, that's fun. :)

16gr? I was shooting 6 in a 38 spl, so I think it would be safe.

16gr is the max load for a 385gr cast bullet according to Hodgdon data, probably cuz that's all the "cheerios" that will fit in the case!!
So 16gr under a 325gr should be fine as long as you don't seat the bullet too deep.

It is not a bad idea to look at the data, low and high charges, and pick something in between. Almost always the most accurate is not the top load anyway. Ive never heard of anybody getting in trouble with a load in between, or the start loads, its always stuff on the top end (or as we used to say in drag racing," its go or blow").

with that formula, i developed a fine reduced load for my hornet using an sb-1 frame.
very effective @75 yrds.... ;D

I don't shoot reduced loads in a 45/70. That's not what I have a 45/70 for. If I want less recoil I get a smaller gun. I shoot most 425gr and 550gr in my marlin at full power for the marlin, and some loads are over book data.

In the Bolt action 45/70s I kill every ones shoulder, but it is full power, and thats the way I like it.

Killed him dead. Ruined the rest of the day for his friends too.
The game, or your shoulder, isnt really going to notice that your load is 10% less than 'book top'. Added advantage, that gun you like so much will last longer too.

16 grains max for a 300 grain cast bullet or 16.5 grains for a 385 grain cast..I really don't think he's going to have any problem with it..I wonder where did the OP get his loading data from that he is worried about it?

It never hurts to call them when a person is concerned over any load made using their powder...Real nice folks to deal with.

Nothing personal but your statement reminds me of a few other folks at the range. I normally reserve My Ruger #1 in 458 Win Mag loaded with stout (not max) 500GR solid loads for them to try. One big dude decided he had to fight the recoil and not listen.......... He touched off a single round and stood there for a second. Once he turned around to give the rifle back his lip was quivering and a tear formed in his eye. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the 505 Gibbs was within reach.  ;D

I use Trail Boss in my 30-06 with a suppressor.  Nice subsonic loads.  The bullet hitting the target is louder than the gun going off.  This is the kind of thing you see in the movies, just a soft whisper when the gun fires, then a smack when the bullet strikes.  OOOOOOOOH I love it.
