I looked in the FAQ's and just want to clarify this.
Serial Number : am257277
according to FAQ's - 1974 - AM (prefix)
But below that it says "Second letter of prefix:"
and the M = 1998
The second letter of the prefix is what confuses me... if the two digit prefix is already established in the first section regarding the prefixes. I am assuming it is made in 1974, but just want to clarify what the "Second letter of prefix" part pertains to if it is already covered in the first list.
Thanks for the help

I've wondered that very same thing.

The second letter only applies to two letter serial prefix numbers starting with N or H which are those made by H&R 1871, the others were made by H&R Inc that went out of business in 1986, any serial number starting with A was made by H&R Inc.
