Ohio refinishing needed
« on: February 16, 2010, 02:14:42 AM »
Not refinishing really - but, I have a Colt 1911 Gov't in nickel that is tagged for a serious workover by a select gunsmith.  While the gunsmith can ensure the nickel is stripped and the gun refinished properly, he does not do this in-house and the double shipping costs will intrude into the overall build of the finished product.

So, I'm looking for a local smith that can strip my frame and slide down to the metal (everything else is being replaced) with every coutesy given to the original rollmarks (which can be restored a bit if needed).  I'd like to send the gun to the selected 'smith "in the white."

I'm in central Ohio, so looking for someone within 100 miles or so to get my gun "in the white"...?

Thanks - redleg

Check with the smiths that support GBO and if none close a call to Brownells techline should help. They used to maintain a list of smiths.

Tetra, and I believe Birchwood Casey make a product called blue and rust remover. Not sure if it would work on nickel though. Either one is about $6-$8, might be worth trying it yourself. gypsyman

Nickle won't be removed by a blue/rust removal product. The usual method for removal is reverse electroplating.. Electroless nickle may be a different proposition but I would be the reversed eletroplating would remove it also. Again the refinisher should know. Good luck..
