Pipe smoking?
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:40:08 AM »
How popular is pipe smoking today? I used to see guys regularly smoke pipes, but I don't recall the last time I saw one. Has it essentially disappeared?

I still smoke my falcon occasionally but not as often as I did. I think its sorta like cigars. People still smoke them just more often at home with a drink or after a good meal. I just have a hard time finding the tobac I like to smoke. Have to order by the pound to get Q1 blend here. Also I dont think pipes are like cigs in that I never met pipe chain smoker :D

I carry some pipe tobacco in my pack and sprinkle a little on my camp fire sometimes just for the aroma.

Only known 2 people to do it in my life.  One of my dad's uncles as a kid (who has since passed on), and 1 guy who worked at my previous job about 6 years ago (we were both teaching at a tech school at the time).  The latter was just an oddball.  Wore slacks and a tie to work everyday (we were required to), but drove to work on a motorcycle with leather jacket and chaps that he'd take off before classes began.  He'd take 2-3 pipe breaks per day between classes.  He was more or less a hippy.

Other than that though, no.  Smoking in general is declining greatly in popularity.  I'd expect all aspects to decline proportionately.

When I was a kid, I loved being around my uncle as he always had his pipe glowing with that Prince Albert. By the time I was 13, I had a pipe stashed out behind the shed, as smoking was taboo in Dad's house. I worked in a warehouse (at 13) and the laws were different then so getting tobacco was no problem. Didn't like smoking Prince Albert, at that age. It was too strong for me. I tried cherry blend, and stayed with it until I was 16, when I switched over to Edgeworths' Blend 11. I really liked that. When I got overseas, I switched to Heather Honey. In that humidity, it was about like smoking candy - wet and sweet. Getting back home, I traversed back to Blend 11, but it was hard to locate and I went to Capt Black until 14years ago. I was getting married again and, though my wife's dad smoked a pipe that she liked, I knew she didn't like kissing an ashtray (in her words). So, unknown to her, I put the pipes in a Zip-lock bag and stashed them amongst my treasures in the garage. Several years later, wife was on a visit back home and I took a hankering for my pipe. Found my stuff and opened the bag, and just about gagged on the smell of that stale tobacco. I had put the pipes away wet and dirty and how they had turned!! I zipped the bag and trashed it. Never since have had another hankering.
FWIW - I went back home in '96, yup, 14 years ago, just after I had gotten married (for the last time) and visited my Uncle. He had quit his pipes about 5 years earlier (I'd been gone 11 years) and thrown his collection away, man he had some nice stuff in that rack! My aunt had come down with emphasema? and they both had to quit as she was on oxygen. She had since passed away, but he never went back to his pipes.  Smoking in general is way down in popularity, and pipes and cigars (I think) are part of a dying generation.

One of the marks of the regular pipe smoker that I recall was brown teeth. This yielded an unflattering smile. There was a guy that worked at the tobacconist shop who had brown teeth, and a few of the teeth were worn where he held his pipe habitually. Reminded me of the tooth wear that Benny Goodman had from clarinet playing.

My dad smoked a pipe. When he died in Jan 1991 I could still smell his pipe in his garage. The aroma was still there until the tornado in 1999 that took the house down.Wish i could still smell it.Bought some of the tobacco that he smoked. His was a home made blend.H&H and cherry blend blended together.I've sniffed the smell out of the baggy.Slow

I smoked a pipe on and off from my late teens right through my late twenties.I tried all of the LEGAL tobacco and really enjoyed the taste.Toward the end of my smoking I  mostly smoked Half & Half.I also found that a well broken in corn cob pipe was hard to beat.Slipshod
