Building a small reloading bench
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:09:35 AM »
Since our move last year,I have no reloading bench. So I need a small one with some storage area under it. I keep coming back to the idea of just buying a 24''-30'' kitchen base cabinet with drawers, and topping it with either the counter top used on them,or a piece of solid door which I already have.Seems like a quick way to do it,and would look nice to boot. Also can buy dents and damaged ones at lowes or home depot.
Has anyone here done this? If so chime in with any advise, and maybe a pic or two!

Yes it is done all the time.
Perhaps an extra piece of wood if needed under your press for support.
Might even get a small cabinet to go on the wall above the bench for additional storage.
Just make sure the top is fastened well so it does not lift up.

Sounds like a great plan!  I'm currently building mine as part of my workbench down one whole side of my garage.  It's built on several base cabinets meant for garage storage and two long sections of finished formica countertop.  I'll have a lot of cabinet space and 14' of uninterrupted benchtop.  If I could convince my wife to let me have a bench inside the house, I'd be going the route that you're talking about.

A solid door for the top would give you a stronger base for the press, vise and anything else. I found a small 18"x24" bench in the trash somebody made with angle iron; has a steel top but I am on the lookout for a nice solid door to cut down for a top. I did find a piece of heavy vinyl that I cut down for the top so small parts don't bounce as much if I drop them. Just found an industrial drafting light at Goodwill for $3 yesterday. I was kinda hoping they were going to sell the drafting table too ... all steel frame, solid 1" thick top, lots of drawers ... but they're keeping it to fold clothes on.
