All you need is a buttstock and you would also have a nice little carbine as well

I have the m 44 in a 8.25" barrel that I plan on using for deer this year. In Iowa they don't start us till  dec 6 this year. What do you use for a rest? At the range even with a two hand grip this is not to stable. Tried bracing my arm to a tree and firing accross the forearm, seared the sweat shirt, top of the hand was pelted and bleeding. I wont try that again. I am refering to a stalk hunt rather than a tree stand or similar.

Well Jim as fat and old and out of shape as I am I sure don't do the stalk hunting I used to. Love it but am just not physically able to do it these days as I once could. Most of my hunting these days is from a tree stand.

But when I hunted from the ground more I either shot free hand or used whatever rest was available. I use both hands on the grip wrapping my left around and over my right. I try to rest my wrists or the side of a hand against a tree or limb when possible. That's about as good as it gets using revolvers stalk hunting. With iron sights I generally limit myself to 50-60 yards and at that range I can make the shot free handed with no real problem. Over that where I hunt it is too thick to see much less shoot deer.

I used the new "long tom" 12" M44 Taurus this morning to take a deer so it is already bloodied even tho I've not had it long.

Shot two deer this morning for my daily limit. The first was at long range using a scoped R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in .30-06. When I got down to go check on it I left the rifle and my gear in the stand and just put the Taurus on using my bandolier holster. As I approached the area I expected the deer to be in I saw a deer run a short way and stop. Wasn't sure if same one or not. Pulled the M44 from holster and fired dropping it on the spot with a spine shot. No that wasn't exactly where I intended the bullet to go but it worked. There was brush between me and the deer but fairly close to the deer. I assume it moved the bullet a wee bit off course but then I was shooting free hand from close to 50 yards so it might have been the old Graybeard that moved the bullet a wee bit off course.

This was first deer for both guns so next trip I'll have to take a couple of others that haven't yet scored or maybe I'll just take my favorite rifle the R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08. I'll be carrying the Ruger Bisley 5.5" Accusport limited edition SS .45 Colt with me on my hip for the short range stuff.
