223 Barrel question
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:57:02 AM »
I am considering ordering a 20 inch ss 223 barrel from tc custom shop.  My question is would you order a standard barrel or heavy.  difference is on 20 bucks in price.  Your opnions appriciated.

Thanks in advance

I'd go with the tapered barrel (I presume by "standard" you meant tapered).  You're apparently trying to save weight by going with a shorter barrel so why then go with a heavy barrel?  Also, in shooting numerous tapered and standard Encore barrels, I've found the tapered barrels to be very accurate.

Also, since you're going with a custom barrel, you might look at Match Grade Machine.  I recently bought a barrel from them and have been VERY impressed with the quality thereof.

Looked at MGM but the cost is about 75$ different.  Be using it has "truck"gun.  If I am out and about want to be able to quickly shoot.  Only reason for the short barrrel

I suggest picking up a used standard tapered barrel and having it cut and re-crowned by sskindustries.com, you will save much money.

If you are going the T/C's custom way, then I would get an 223 Remington Ackley Improved chamber if you are paying the custom price.

I personally have a 24" 223 Remington standard tapered Encore barrel with an Adult synthetic stock and it’s shorter that most youth bolt rifles.

I have a factory 21" tapered barrel in 223 it is so amazingly accurate and easy to shoot so obviously I would recommend a stock factory barrel...

I've got to agree with the Camp Cook.  ;D  I've got a standard factory 21" 223, a 222, and a 22Hornet and, it just doesn't get a whole lot better...
Now, I got one of the "new" 23" barrels, a mach2, and I'm not so crazy about it yet....thinkin' about choppin' it to about 19-20" or so.

I've had a 23inch and a 16inch 223 barrels and I like the 16inch the best for compactness. The overall length was less than 30inches and was real handy, fit in a short carbine guncase along with boxes of ammo in the magazine pockets. As for T/C Custom Shop or MGM, I have barrels from both and both produce excellent barrels. But have seen some very bad workmanship from the "Custom Shop" with off-center chambers, overly long throats, etc. My last 5 barrels have be from MGM.
Just my 2 cents
