Is $279 a fair price for a .204 handi?
« on: February 18, 2010, 06:20:01 AM »
Im looking to get a .204 Ruger for rabbit hunting. The local shop is telling me its will be $279 for the basic Handi Rifle in .204. It seems a bit steep to me... Am I getting scammed? For $330 I can get a several shot bolt action Stevens in the same caliber.

Thanks guys

Handi's run the gamet on price depending on your area. If it's new that is not an outragous price... try and get it out the door for the $280 maybe with a box of ammo. I hope your talking about Jack Rabbits or head shot Snowshoes.Anything else you will waste. I know from PD hunting I had a blast and several high launches from 200+ yards on Jacks to me they are more fun to hit than the PD's just not as many. Kurt

My problem is I live in a very isolated area so the local places can rape on the prices and not have to worry much about competition. I would probably be better off ordering online and having it shipped to a FFL here for $20. SO I suppose this brings up a new question. Can anyone recommend a good place online to order?

This will be my first rabbit hunting experience. I plan on ONLY taking head-shots to save the meat and pelt. I recently moved from WI to MT and sold half of my guns when I got here. My big heavy branch shredding bullets that worked well in Wisconsin woods dont work as well out here in the vast open areas.

Here in N IL I have very few rabbits anymore haven't had many for yrs due to first the farmers removing all the fence rows and now having a Redtail Hawk every 500yrds. The few we have where I do most of my hunting we let run. But when I was a kid we used mostly shotguns for them. If it was me today and I have been to MT a few times...if I was set on hunting them with rifle I would look at a 17HMR Sportster they are every bit as accurate as the 204 good for a rabbit as far as you can possibly shoot and will not explode one like the 204 will. You can wing a PD with the 204 and still tear them in half. A 22L would maybe be better yet .But personally I don't think they are as accurate as a 17HMR or a17MII sportster.Kurt

Check links like:

They all seem to have competitive prices most of the time.

Hope it helps,

Probably the best online source is Bud's, he has the synthetic Handi-grip 204 in stock for $275 shipped.

I see that H&R is now chambering a wildcat in the Handi Grip.

I usually don't thread crap, but I gotta say that a 24" bull barrel .204 (imagine fat barrel, with a tiny hole) sending a bullet at almost 4kfps, is an interesting choice for a rabbit gun. All around long range, low recoil  varmint/pest control gun that is never carried more than 5 minutes, maybe. In which case it is gonna want a super duper scope.

Okay, so I just gotta ask:  What the difference between the .35-06 and the .35 Whelen?

That's got to be a typo.  They surely mean .25-06!

Just another one of H&R's many typos, they must have the same webmaster/editor that Gardner had!!  ;D

If your guy is telling you $279 that wouldn't be a bad deal cause if you get it from Bud's when they're back in stock, you're still gonna have to pay someone the FFL transfer fee to do the paperwork for you. $275 from Bud's + 20 for the fee and you're over.

As some points of comparison, Crossfire, in Independence Missouri has a heavy barrel .204 wood stock on the rack for $295.

Family Pawn in Jefferson City has a heavy barrel 223 with scope and wood stock for $295, and a 7mm-08 wood stock for $259.
