8mm x 375 H&H ?
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:41:43 PM »
The 300 H&H and the 350 Griffin & Howe are necked down .375 H&H's.

Good ballistics and smooth, flawless feeding and extraction under any conditions.

How about a .375 H&H necked down to 8mm (.323") retaining the tapered, sloping case profile?

270, I think this would be pretty close to Keith's old 334okh except he used a 333 dia. bullet... another thing unless one has a fondness for the 8mm which I don't, if I were looking at this wildcat, I would go with the std. 338 dia. bullets because there is such a wide assortment available to the handloader...there is a great deal of enjoyment in havingsome thing different...I made the .300 H H because it is not seen much now..Old Keith was making new rifles when he was 80 years old...I think it kept him young...if I had only hunted with my old 06, things would have gotten boring pretty quickly, and I doubt I would have the interest in it that I do today.... Right now I am thinking of the calibers to use this fall.....this sounds like fun, but I would go 338

Something pretty close was made in 1939. It's called the 8X68s. Quite a round to be sure.

Yes Mauser, you're quite right.  The 8x68 is a pretty hot number.

Already been done.

The 8mm Remington Magnum. 375 H&H necked down to 8mm, one of the most unsuccessful commercial cartridges ever put into production. Not saying it wouldn't be a good hunting cartridge, just that it never caught on. The .338 win mag won the popularity contest.

Actually a blown out 375 case, much as the 300 Wea without the Wea. double radius shoulder, so it has more capacity than the 375H&H. In fact Sundra developed a wildcat 375 JRS, which is the 8RM necked up to 375. This would lose some of the "feed" characterists of the 375H&H case, but I have never heard of a 8RM user who had "feed" issues. Makes good campfire talk though and has some merit for a dangerous game round, I do not see the advantage for an 8mm. Yes, I would go with the 8RM, better ballistics & no case forming.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

Your right I know some that still hunt with the 8mm Mag and I see maybe one or two every year at some gunshows.

Yep, 8 Rem Mag, circa 1977 and discontinued as a regular catalog item in 1984, I think.  Available as a Custom Shop item from then until ???, maybe even now (?), brought back in 1998 as that year's annual 700 Classic chambering.

I read and re-read Cl. Charles Askins descriptions and praise of it and finally bought one of the Classics when they came around.  I can attest that it's a fire breather!  I've never shot a 340 Weatherby or any of the comparable RUM's, but it's considerably more potent than a 300 Win Mag and recoils more sharply than a 375 H&H with factory 300 gr. loads.  Factory 200 gr. ammo isn't bad but you can get a chronographed 3000 fps with a Hornady 220 gr. Interlock and Alliant RL-25.  For me, a Limbsaver pad was a nice addition.  -WSJ
