I have excess to a navel 5 inch 38 deck cannon that has been demilled nonfireable. On special days they would like to simulate a live fire.My thought was a thunder mug type device in the mussel of the cannon, I have a 4 inch od 1 1/2 incn id  1 foot long piece of steel tubing  that I can plug .I can insert a pipe or rod down barrel to breach block to keep thunder mug near mussel end. and use a e-match or quick-match to sat it off.  I am not a blank shooter and have know idea what kind of bp charge to use that would give a 5in cannon a half scale boom and flash. I can't use any wodding that will burn or leave a mess. Any ideas?

There are many 'simulators' that use propane and air.  Some of such size that earplugs won't help.

You'd need to find a way of mass producing them ......lots of little one 1" or so and some bigger ones about 2" ......When I fisrt saw thunder mugs back in a South Bend Catologe ...I didnt get them at all ....

But enmass ! Hokie Mokie ! they are just too cool . even one is cool once you understand the signal aspect like a ship too shore ,or a warning .
Almost like a domino cannon effect ....no exactly like a domino cannon !!

Dom makes a great "Thunder Mug", and he made me a real nice "Thunder Cup", small scale in Golf Ball size. Works great and makes a satisfying "Whoomp" In fact, it might be my "noise maker of choice" on the "Ring in the Spring" day!

Do Mike and I enjoy swimming upstream?  Not much.  Do we enjoy going against the flow?  Not really.  Sometimes, however, we find it necessary to do so to save someone's eyesight or hearing or prevent facial disfigurement of our friends and fellow cannoneers.

We sense a lot of emotion here and do admit these various video clips are very exciting as just about all fireworks displays are.  Before you run off and buy or make one of these noisemakers for your backyard celebration, ask yourself to answer the following question honestly:

Would you load and fire your 1/3 scale Napoleon Gun-Howitzer, 1.5 Inch Bore while standing 2 to 5 FEET in Front of it and 1 to 3 FEET to the side??  Think of how loud your friends would yell at you if you ever attempted to do something THAT foolish!!  Yet, fellow cannoneers, that is exactly what you will be doing every time you load and fire your thunder mug fireworks device.

Most of you cannot do one handed push-ups any more, us included, yet that is about the only safe position when firing these devices.

Think carefully before rebutting this safety warning, however rebuttals are cordially welcomed.  We will NOT use the old Springfield Arsenal video clip as proof of these statements, but PROOF it is.

Well lemme see. One handed pushups are out and so is the two handed type. Running isn't exactly great either. I vote for a really long fuse. Light it and do an apporoximation of running. Feets don't fail me now. Frank

Tracy's right sorta.

What he is trying to get you to visualize is  6 foot person standing three feet way lighting a foot tall thunder mug quill with a linstock.

It's one thing to light a mortar that is pointing at a 45 degree angle away from you and a thunder mug pointing straight up putting you in its muzzle blast cone.

Thunder mugs need a long fuse and an escape route to be safely fired.  Along with practicing safety we need to be sure we plan safety.

Shooting a thunder mug can be done safely with that extra step, plan safety.

Not to mention possible damage to other parts of the body. Wouldn't wanna have a premature conflagration while in this position  :o

Zulu, I built this one last spring, used it without the handle or flash pan for awhile, then finished it just in time for the 4th of July.

It has a 1" bore and fires one ounce of Fg as a salute charge (outdoors).

It won't be long until it reprises its original assignment as a "bird scare" device, discouraging the spring infestation of birds into our shop. For this purpose the thundermug is fired on its side in a wooden cradle and the charge is only a half-ounce.

FWIW the welding/machine shop is large with a high ceiling and plenty of vetilation (too much lately, brrrr!) and firing the thundermug in there is perfectly safe.

I need to get some video of it being fired this way. This year I'm going to have to modify the cradle since the thundermug has a handle now, last year it was just the tube.

Or, I may just build another one...  ;D

Terry C,
Want to trade one for a wooden cannon?  I'd like a 1 1/2" bore.  That looks really cool.  Where are you located?

Victor,
Can't you find some way to raise your mind up out of the gutter? :D

Some time ago there was a thread about thunder mugs, and someone was wondering how big the biggest thunder mugs ever made would be. Well, the three in this photo are the biggest I've ever seen.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.
