I need to make a correction
« on: February 19, 2010, 05:38:04 PM »
In a few post talking about scopes I suggested simmons pro diamond or nikon pro staff because I said they would clear the hammer if using weaver quad lock medium scope rings. I was wrong; I was mistakenly calling the weaver quad lock high scope rings mediums. Sorry for any confusion and my sincere apologies to anyone that bought the mediums only to find out they did not let the scope clear the hammer.

Good show man!!

But don't be so hard on your self!!  IIRC the med weavers should work just fine with the Nikon pro staff. I have used them myself and currently have one Nikon in LO PRW rings on a handi and that is fine, so the higher Weaver should also be just fine. I do not have the Simmons to try....

I use med. rings with the Nikon Prostaff.

When I found out how well the high Weaver Quad locks work with my scopes, I went back to Wally World and bought several sets of them!  Now I'm all set when I buy a new scope.  44 Man

Sometimes I take the Weaver #62 scope rail and turn it around and drill a new hole in one part and hawg out the existing ones to get three screws in the rail. This rail is lower in height. Sometimes depending on the scope type and the eye relief needed, medium rings can work. I keep four sets of those inexpensive aluminum Tasco/Simmons type in medium and high for such adventures. For untapped Tracker II shotgun barrels the 62 works great as it has no pre drilled holes. Like I indicated the rifle barrels require modification.

I have found that the smaller ocular bell type scopes like the Weaver V3 or the Leupold 1-4x20 seem to fit lowest on the barrel, and are all I use now on the handi-toppers I own. I see the Simmons 1.5-5's and the 2x in 20 mm are hard to find and probably discontinued, though I have no experience with them, they would probably be likely "low fitting" candidates as well.

I wish other companies would keep that ocular bell smaller in diameter on some scopes to clear the handi type hammer. I really dislike bobbing the hammer and only did it once to a .308 I nolonger have.

Now you guys got me wondering. are you using the mediums with the factory scope base? I just got 2 45-70s and niether one had the factory base, one of them has a weaver 82 and I'm not sure what is on the other one other than it has hex screws. I wonder if its an allignment thing with these bases, or if these bases aren't as tall as the factory bases.

Carbineman I put a weaver 62 on a 20ga tracker II, But I put a Tru Glo 2X red dot on it so it sits well in front of the hammer.

The height of the scope rails are a little bit different as I had done some measuring. Also the height of each individual ring manufacturer is a little different also.

Those Tracker II's are fun to use the #62 scope rail on. It is always a toss up what rings will work as everybody seems to need a little different placement of the scope (ahead or back) for thier particular eye relief.
