Is it enough?
« on: November 08, 2003, 01:31:38 PM »
Having a rifle chambered for a 7BR +.050 in length.  Will this be enough power for the rams in silhouette?   I plan to use the 139 Hornady's for the close stuff and 169 BT Match or the Hornady 175 FB Spt for the ram line.  Is my thinking correct or should I just have gone with the 7/08?  Regards...Gary

The 7 BR will be just fine - I used one for years in my standard rifle and never had problems with rams or any of the other animals.  I used 120's on the first 3 and 168's on the rams.

I experienced less ram loss with the 7 BR than any other cartridge I have ever used, 243, 308, 7/08, 7 TCU, my feeling is that the 7 BR seems to give the bullet optimum energy on target (push, shove, energy or whatever you would like to call it).

The best part of it is that you will probably also pick up hits on the first 3 targets due to reduced recoil and the fact that you can concentrate more on your hold and less on whats going to happen to you when you pull the trigger.

I have a 7br and I load the 168 ser. mtk 30.5 grs of varget 2434 fps, have shot this for one season and have not lost a ram to date. I load the 130 ser. mtk 30.5 varget for the c,p,t 2400 fps, but i'm going to take it up to about 2500 fps. what is the 7br +0.50 and what are the atvantages of this cartridge.

Nothing more than having your gunsmith run the 7BR reamer in .050 deeper than normal.  kind of an offshoot of the 6BRX which is the 6BR run in .100 deeper.  All you do s overexpand the neck of the parent case and create a false shoulder for fireforming.  Thought about the .100 deeper deal but I wanted a little more neck to work with.  Wildcats are FUN.  Regards...g
