Tire bead seater cannon
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:31:31 AM »
If you've never seen a bead seater, it's nothing more than a 3-5 gallon air tank with
a quick coupler or shrader valve to fill. They come with a ball valve installed. Then there
is a couple feet of plastic or metal pipe, half-flattened at the end. This is put next to
the tire/rim and the valve is opened to seat the tire bead on a stiff truck tire.
If you unscrew the flattened pipe and add on a pipe of your chosen diameter, you
have a fine shooter. We use golf balls. Problem is....these tanks run 2-$300. Buy a
portable air tank, weld on a pipe fitting, add a ball valve & pipe. Should be less than
$100, easy.

What is your barrel length and how much air pressure do you use? Is the golf ball naked or patched? What kind of range or MV do you get? Thanks for any details.

A used freon tank can be used for little money . The HVAC guys knock the valves off of them and throw them away. A 50 lb drum works well . Just do the welding in a well vented place.

Above post is a cheaper way to build an air canon/ spud gun.  I made one similar. I used 4" pvc for my tank section, and a ball valve instead of the sprinkley valve. Made different sized barrels. I can launch a tator 100-125 yards easy out of the 2" diameter barrel. Could go farther if I went to 125 lb of air. I usually only go to around 90.  If you make the barrels for potato shooting. On the outer end of the barrel. File the inside of the barrel, so it tapers inside. That way your tator will fit snug and hold the air better until it reaches the end of the barrel. Oh and buy a couple bags of tators  ;)
