I brought home a pup last week that had apparently been abandoned on a rural Highway pretty much in the middle of nowhere. She appears to be a beagle who had been very neglected. All her ribs were showing along with her hip sockets and backbone. Half her hair was missing from what appeared to be a bad case of flea/tick infestation and what we call "red mange." After getting her home I weighed her, she appears to be around 5 weeks and weighed only one pound and two ounces. I fed her and shortly there after I noticed her dragging her bottom, a good indication of intestional worms. Some liquid wormer fixed this problem. A good flea bath along with a permethrin dip seems to have the skin problems under control, she still scratches but I suspect this is from the scabbing of the sores and bites. Her weight has almost tripled from regular feedings. Her hair is growing back well and seems to be making great progress. She is very active, still somewhat skittish and spends a good amount of time outside with her nose to the ground as she is constantly sniffing. I recently gave her her 5 in 1 "puppy" shots but recently she has started scratching at her ears and muzzle. She will whimper and whine while digging at her muzzle occasionaly scratching her head along side the couch, chair, or your leg while shaking her head side to side. I suspect ear mites. I examined her ears but have not seen the classic brown waxy build up. I plan on giving her mite drops as a precaution but am concerned as I might be missing something. Anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing her head shaking and muzzle scratching??
