Need a Shorty
« on: February 20, 2010, 07:20:11 AM »
Hi I'm new here, need a little help. I pick up a 12ga Partner new in the box at a GS for 50.00$. I would like to make a shorty out of it. I hunt on a ATV and crutch's for ground hogs, close with a ghillie suit.
You could say I'm a urban hunter, one of my fields sets right behind a Wal-mart, I have 8 fields that way around the town I live in. Most of my shots are 15 to 20yds. Need to make it as lite as I can,it's a mod barrel. If I cut back to 18" how would it pattern. Also I can't find FAQ for this board.

Jim

I have build a couple shorties. Make your barrel closer to 18.5 to account for ruler differences between you and johnny law...

Good luck,'

^ yeah, go 18 1/2" just to be safe. I just made up a 2nd Pardner shorty myself using blue painter's tape (to get a square cut) and a hacksaw + file. I let a gunsmith cut the 1st bbl. for me, but this worked OK and saved me about $40. I slapped one of these on it and I think I'm GTG:

Its designed to snap on the barrel and stay there by grasping the factory bead.

It will stay prety well even with out the bead, but would move.

the  increased noise might be a bigger  problem in the shorty
then  the  size  of the full length gun
in an  urban setting

i  am speculating
and it would depend  on shot size  and other variables

you  may  loose 10 or 20 yards  range

i do  like shorties  tho

Short barrels don't actually increase sound...
The sound exits the barrel closer to the shooter so to them its louder appearing. A short barrel anything sounds different at a difference, but isn't truly any louder.

The pattern defineately opens up shooting shot with no choke, but with slugs you only realy suffer from a shorter site radius. (IF you add sites) I have a couple that easilt keep all shots of a softball at 50-75yards. (WITH sites)

i shot  my  9 inch  o/u  at the turkey shoot  ..just for the halibut

when  it  went  off

every body  looked it was  so loud

i  don't  know  if i won  or not
if i did  it was on some one elses  card......my  card  had  no hits  [90 feet]

next  time  out  to the range
i think  i will bring seveal barrel lengths
let some one else shoot  while  i listen
i  have  9,  18, 20, 28, 30    in  12 ga

Mine is cut to 19 and patterns lousy with buck shot.  You could probably take it to a gunsmith and get it threaded for chokes after it was cut.  It shoots slugs very well though.

The key to using a shotgun to it's full potential is to shoot it for pattern. You have got to know where your dense area are and where your light area are. If you shoot several targets with the same shells, as in say Federal low base 7 1/2's there will be  definite groupings in the patterns that are alike.

I found this out because when I was a kid my dad got me a 12 ga. Mossberg for my 12th birthday. One of his friends used to shoot trap so he would take me out to shoot with him every Wed evening during the summer. The first day out he had me pattern my shotgun several times. It didn't mean much to me but he was teaching me all the basics. My gun had a poly choke, and he showed me that when screwed down to the full choke setting what my pattern looked like. Then he progressed to open it up to the setting I should use when shooting trap. What I remembered was, that at full choke there was a really dense area in the pattern at about 7 O'clock. Years later this would come home to me when I started shooting in turkey shoots. When I took my space on the line at a turkey shoot I would put the bead on the upper right hand corner of the paper instead of in the dead center. The only guy that could beat me with any regularity was my high school home room teacher Mr. Murphy. He had an old Browning humpback with a 32" barrel.

Been thinking, Don't think I'm going to cut it down. I got 27 ground hog the way it is. By cutting off 9.5" is not going to save that much weight. If I'm going to do something with it, I'll just buy a new barrel for it. Thanks for all your input.   Jim

Jim at those short ranges I would suggest a 22mag or 17HMR with a small 2x shotgun scope, RedDot, or open sights would be just fine.
You would probably get more shots out in the day as well.
Just throwing that out there... ;)

Thank's, but I went to a shotgun because of what is down range. I have a wal-mart by one, homes on two sides on one. Things are just a little close, wish I had a 410.  Jim
