BEST long casting rod??
« on: February 20, 2010, 09:15:21 PM »
OK thats the subject. but here are the specfic's  I want to cast a very light bait for trout, and I want to throw it a long ways, at least 35 - 40 yds.  How long of a pole, and what would CABELAS call it?

I have a buddy that does it, and I think he uses an 11 ft. pole but I don't know what kind the pole is.

I figure a pole is cheaper than a boat!

Thanks

I believe the action of the rod and the line more so than the length will determine distance. Any rod 7' or more long with an ultra light action using 2 to 4 pound test line should be able to do it but that does depend on just how light that lure is ya wanna cast. I like an 8' to 10' rod for ultra light fishing if distance of cast is important. At my pond it mostly isn't really as I can walk around the bank and using a 16' cane pole and reach most any spot in it but being able to cast further reduces the walking.

I have a trigger action underspin reel on an 8' light action fly rod for #5 weight line that seems to get my light baits out as far as needed in my three quarter acre pond. B&M makes some crappie poles and crappie rods that Cabela's sells that likely would do what you want. The rods have ferrules for casting where as the poles don't and are used more like an old cane pole.

An aerodynamic lure is also important. A Floating Rapala, not so good, a lead head jig, better.

I don't trout fish but I do jig fish and use spinners for crappie and bluegill. I use a BnM crappie pole with an ultra lite spinning reel. Will chunk a light lure quite a ways. Also has a very light action.

We fish for steelhead in the Salmon River during the winter.  Casting small baits (egg sacks and yarn flies) with very light line (4-6 lbs. test)  using spinning reels.  You need what is called a "noodle rod".  Its a long, soft action rod with a lot of line guides, designed to cast a light weight a long way, and cushin the hit of a decent size fish on light line.  Kind of like a fly rod with a spinning handle.  Most big retailers like Cabalas and Bass Pro have em.
