The "Instructor" told me when I took the course to not score a perfect score on the shooting due to the fact that when it came up in court, and it will if you use your weapon, a perfect score "might" indicate that you could have not missed your target and injured a bystander or you could have not killed the target and just wounded him to stop him.  I have always wondered how that would go for a LEO in the same situtation.

By the Way congratulations on passing, now the fun part, waiting for the Gov. to get the paperwork done.

Oldshooter-

Your "instructor" is full of beans.  The courts have held a firearm to be a deadly weapon, don't matter whether you are shooting for the legs or the head.  The use of a firearm against another person is deadly force.  Period.   All police train to shoot for center mass, which means the chest, as it is the biggest target that is apt to stop someone immediately.  A lot of Dept.s teach double tap's.  Purpose is not to kill, but to stop someone from committing an immediate act of violence against someone else.  That happens to be shooting them in the heart/lungs, spine, or head.

Highway Man-

Good deal.  Read up on whats available in a carry / self defense handgun.  Plenty of good advice in these forums.  I always like something big and shinny that shoots a big bullet...lol

Bigeasy good point , would add that paper punching could never compare and a good lawyer would point that out . Last i read cops hit one in seven shots as an average . Not bad when someone is shooting at you at the same time . But it does bring up the old saying you can't miss fast enough to win .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

i used a 4506 i had for years i can still shoot the best with this pistol.

You may have thrown them away but your score was recorded enabling them to determine who passed and who failed, At least in Texas its done that way.

In Kentucky it is a simple pass or fail no score taken a passing score is fifteen out of twenty one rounds in the black, Besides that, it is a concealed deadly weapon permit, Not a firearms permit, Covers any deadly weapon that can be concealed.

Interesting, in WA state everyone passes, there is no test and no class, ask for a permit and they give you one.  Larry

THIS IS ALL VERY INTERESTING! I'm trying to remember how many rounds we shot, the ranges were 7'. 10' and 15' and I think it was like 15 to 20 rounds at each distance and you had to score a certain amount in the center ring to qualify.

I put a couple in the shoulders and one in the neck for grins so mine was not perfect, but you'd have to be a dufuss not to pass.

Interesting how it varies from state to state, maybe the reason some states dont recognize others permits.  ???

The course is an overview and if one pays attention then passing is pretty easy.
Most of the failure comes from the background check, which is exhaustive in Texas, and this eliminates a few---but no one knows who or how many.

Your instructor is an idiot.  Courts look at justification to use deadly force.  Anything else is crap brought up by the defense.  I've heard the same stuff about not using reloads.  "Don't use reloads in self-defense because the court might think you're a gun nut, or that your ammo is too powerful."  Nothing matters in court except the circumstances of the actual shot or shots that killed or wounded the person you needed to stop.  You either have the authority to protect yourself or you don't.  If you defend yourself with a butterknife or a rock or a 2X4, and a death results, you were justified or you were not.

Maybe a good reload argument would be not wanting to use full-house factory ammo and maybe giving the perp a fighting chance  ;D

Anyhow in NH you go to the chief of police, give him a $10 bill and he SHALL ISSUE your pistol permit - and even that's too much red tape!
