I Need New Hunting Clothes............
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:58:32 AM »
This might not be the right place but I don't know where else to post. It's time to replace my ancient gear for cold weather and don't have a clue what to buy. I like bib overall style pants with a short jacket but not supper balky. My quandary is that there is so many new materials out there that my head is pounding from trying to decide. If they still made REAL Woolrich clothes like those of Yesteryear it would be an easy decision but the new stuff is crap compared to my ancient stuff.

If you like wool you may want to check out Beagle Wear (beaglewear.com).  I haven't tried any of it yet, but I think I may order some before next fall.

I've got the newer Columbia wool blend stuff, that I bought used. Its got great water wicking properties, and is real warm. Would never have bought it new, but at the price I got it for, its super! There's so much good gear out there, that people are selling off to pay their bills. Couple months ago I bought 3 pairs of brand new in package Cabelas Polar weight long johns for $40.00 shipped. They were the older stock, but brand new! I would never have bought them from Cabelas, but for the price, it was a great deal. They are thick and super warm. Last fall I got a new Carharts full length arctic coat for $50.00 shipped. There are great deals out there.

have a pair of the woolrich wool bibs.  they are warm and comfortable and so far have survived two horse back hunts.
If you want the same type of wool gear then play on the flison site.
I have some of their stuff and it wears like Iron.  You just need to re apply the oil every so often.  If you hunt in cold climates it works great.
On the same note I have LL Bean, Cabela's revolution fleece, other cabela's stuff and orvis gear. depending on weather, and location.
the briars in the woods in NC would shread my wool pants and bibs.

The Filson Slogan is "Might as well have the best"  and you pay for it.
I have three Filson Coats.
The Cover Cloth coat (fowel weather Jacket) is a little worse for wear as I wear it a lot.
But the Hunting coat and the rain coat are good as new and while thin are really warm.
Toss in the wool liner and the filson hunting hat and you can work up a sweat in a snow storm.

Anyone ever hear of, or buy Sleeping Indian brand clothing? A friend of mine bought some and he said its the warmest stuff he has ever had on. Its wool, and kind of costly. I know it costs more than I would ever spend on hunting clothing, but to each his own.

I have a quad jacket from Cabelas that is their brand . It has gortex in it . You can get it in a coat and pants or bibs . Mine is 9 years old , been to Canada 5 times ( lived in it for 7-8 days each time ). It has held up very well and is like new except for the mud . I deer hunt , duck hunt etc . It has a simi soft fabric and makes little noise . Its the only completely water proof jacket i have , and i have a quad  that cost over $500.00 that leaks and the one it was sent to replace leaked also . The advantage of the quad is layers .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
