The 3rd Almost Annual New River Valley Mortar and Cannon Shoot !
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:23:39 PM »
Saturday July 17th.  Near Willis/Floyd Virginia.

Rules and details to follow as we develop them.

Same place as before, 100 and almost 200 yards.

Great facilities, food and fun.

Limiting cannons to golf-ball bore and smaller - for safety.

We'll keep y'all posted with a summary post from time to time with changes/additions in color.

Let us know if you're coming and what you're bringing.

Looks doable for the 24th, wife and weather permitting.   I will  bring my GB and can mortars since you have to restrict cannons to GB or less.  Really wanted to show off Dom's barrel, may bring it just for show.

We just put the 3rd NRV shoot on our calendar, guys.  We are planning on bringing the Mallet's Mortar Jr. and a completely finished 7" Treble-Banded Brooke Rifle on it's 45 Lb. iron and oak, octagon to round, platform and one, never seen before, mystery gun.  We know how extremely well the first two NRV shoots came off, so we are really looking forward to seeing you fine folks once again!!

ANY excuse to go shooting!

Armorer77,
If memory serves me accurately, you ran into some tough luck when you were trying to get to the first Montana Shoot. Hopefully, if you make this trip to Virginia, you'll have a lot smoother time of it.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Are ya all picking on DoubleD and Montana?

Not at all, just pointing out that it is not quite next door to southern California (1350 to 1500 miles, depending on route.)

On the other hand, the 17 below part I would pick on.   ;D

Is it really a 4.62" bore size, or a scale version?  We would love to see it, either way Lance.  Please bring it.  What do you shoot from it?

[/quote]Mike and Tracy, Yes it has a 4.62" bore. The only ammo i have for it is sections of PVC pipe filled with cement. I changed things around a bit, and the whole thing tips the scales at 145lbs. Here's a pic:

COOL -  at 4.62, it should handle the end-caps for 4" pvc pipe.  (But I'd measure first.)

Can't wait to see it!

Lance, you sure are a rascal!!  Why didn't you show this beauty before.  It's gorgeous!!  I can't wait to see it in person.  Sounds like pretty good ammo.  The closest steel can we have found to this bore size is the large, 4.245" rim dia., 3 Lb. 7 oz., Bush's Best Original Baked Beans Can.  We have been eating a lot of beans and cornbread lately, fortunately I love those foods.

Wow Lance!  Beautiful woodwork and a great looking tube too.

This is going to be an accuracy contest or a thumping contest?   ;D

The wooden bed for your mortar sure looks great. Love the natural tone of the wood. Lots prettier than paint.

I've been thinking about a par 3 mortar golf-ball course at the shoot.  Dale said he see about putting in a 'green' and a cup.

Sounds like fun, Lance.  Please give us a month or so to let all this snow melt.  What type of distance and projectile did you have in mind?  Since we are using these little mortars, I don't believe we are going to do any thumping, so I guess this is an accuracy contest.  What sort of scoring method do you prefer?

Terry C.,   I tried to find my folder of photos for your MORTAR BINGO Contest, but it has disappeared.   :'( :'(  Hope you still have some.
Mortar golf sounds good, Tim.  Dale sure does have the right type of hills for a Municipal Course!

How about a log splitting contest?  As I recall that was a lot of fun on Rickk's western Mass. range!

Regards, and hope to see you there, Dom.
