Who has time for shooting when there is BBQ and cookies. Tee shirts or caps? how about a patch, then i could get a shooting jacket and collect patches.

How about a medal. A flag ribbon with a cannon or mortar on the medallion. Medals look great on uniforms!

I'm not sure I want to remember this event by having someone inject ink into my arm........

dedication only goes so far.......

Now if your talking bagpipes and drums & such that's a different story.........

Now there is a cockamamie idea.  Cracker Jack used to have those in the box when I was a kid.  We thought we were pretty cool with those on.

Lance, you may be giving up some advantage..... if the BBQ is on the smokey side

your eyes may be burning from the smoke :'( and it will be hard to see the targets & balloons.....

The BBQ can't produce near as much smoke as Tim's mortar, so i'll be able to see o.k.

If there are some folks interested, we can setup a Battery of small-bore cannons so folks could enter the POSTAL MATCH!   ;D

Tracy and Mike came up to Longmont today ,we tested one of the Sky Lantern balloon today .

These things really want to fly ! after lighting the pre loaded heat source with a bic it took about a minuite to fill up and get hot enough to want to lift .

The third pic shows some flame damage because it was abit windy and wanted to fold over b4 it got hot .
The paper would burn but it would go out if the flames were not touching it . It had no tendency to light off into a flaming bag .

We made darn sure it didnt get away from us !! but heres a few photos .

Gary,Mike and Tracy, Great pics, looks like it will work. Last time i talked with Tim, i think he said that we can raise trash bag balloons 20' and can set the guns back 100'. I really don't see any problem with me hitting a target that big and that close, with a golf ball.

Hopfully Tim does better than I did as a kid .....they just melt to death instantly if the flame touches the plastic .

These things are 2 or 3 bucks each many differant designs . I got an orange jack olantern (friggin orange)

It would make a nice bright target . There's no way you can build something to equal these things for less money . IMMHO

Tethering is another matter and they will need to be tethered unless you can shoot blindly into the sky ....which of course you can not . that would take some experimenting . Honestly I'd get some mongo toy party balloons and a 'parkpack' or two of helieum .

They will POP when hit , these hot air thinggys would take some hitting as they arent rubber and they have an onboard heat souce . Noone would know exactaly 'who' shot it down .

YMMV

My plan right now is to get a tank of helium and some 30 gal or bigger trash bags.  Tether will be nylon monofilament 20 lb test.

But if we get GOOD at hitting them, a free-flight baloon as you've pictured would certainly be the test of gunnery skills.

Tim, when i called you last week, didn't you say on the phone- balloons 20' high and guns 100' back? or was that just for my balloon gun? My point of view is- after shooting golf balls with lot's of powder, over the mountain at the Blacksburg range, don't you think i can hit a trash bag at 100' with just enough powder to get the job done?

IF the target doesn't move, and IF one can see the projo (at least one is likely) then it should be doable.

Yes, the 20-100 fits the terrain.

IF,IF,IF, That really doesn't inspire me.
I don't think i can hit the balloon, i know i can hit the balloon.
Also, the only reason i want to have a mortar contest with Mike and Tracy, is to prove that i really can shoot mortars too.

Most of life is a series of "if's".  AND, getting through life is easier with the attitude "I KNOW I CAN".  We spend a decade or so teaching our kids that, do we not?

As I remember none where brought down with rifle cannon or JuJu ? I could be wrong  .

I do like the trash bag and helium idea , I think it will work good . No flame no problem .
