I normally stay away from threads like these.  Getting around is getting tougher as time goes on.  I still make it to work every day and I am able to teach all my classes at least.  That is why I play with the small mortars...easier to carry and setup.  We did manage to get out with the fire cracker cannons and the golfball mortars yesterday and send a few slices of break and a couple of fire crackers into the air with the usual copious amounts of smoke.

So ya'll have a safe time.  Travel safe and please post pics for the rest of us (and videos).

Thanks,

bp

THanks, BP !

HELIUM!!!

I have a canister of 9+ cu ft. of the  stuff and 30 ballons.  One idea is to put a bunch of baloons in the larger garbage bag and fly it.  We'll check it out the day of the shoot!.

That's one that I'm not familiar with.  Likely NOTHING at all wrong with it.
As I said, there are a bunch of them that are scattered around the small towns that I've not seen and haven't a clue about their quality.

BUT, if you are aware of one that you have a question about, I'll go over and check it out!

In general, this will be informal shooting.  100 yds, almost 200 (or through the slot between the trees out to 200.  Then the par 3 golf ball will be 3 different ranges - long, medium and short.  All less than 100 yards.

Then the standard range for the Postal Shoot (which I don't remember, but will look up before the 17th).

The baloon shoot will be either at both sites or at Lance's, depending on his choice; depending on how involved he gets if the Pres shows up.  I think that will also be close in.

Log splitting will be up close and personal.

I will be coming up to the area on Friday,  The parents of my best friend from childhood who was also my best man retired to Roanoke years ago,
my friends father was my Scout master for a time many moons ago, He is still active in scouting and the local Ham radio chapter, I have an invite
for dinner and to stay over Friday night, so I'll get a hotel for Sat. night. and head on back Sunday.

Got one small cannon 56 cal. (still need to find food for it)  and if all works out right I should have a golf ball mortar done in time.

I am thinking of an idea for a balloonen shooter but its smaller than golf ball size so it would probably be disqualified....

Allen -  bring your balloonengepopper (scaled) shootin' iron.   ;D

If we're lucky, Lance will bring his over to our range in the afternoon; if not we'll get over to his range.

I'm bringing several mortars in golf-ball caliber,
a hand-gonne or two, one in golf-ball caliber,
a thundermug (octagonal/round) hand held in golf-ball caliber,
and a few more.

This is going to be perhaps a little more informal than I'd planned, as I have to be in Atlanta on Tues/Weds/Thurs this week.

Those who come expect to assist in roles of safety and oversight.

We're most fortunate, Lance will be bringing his battle proven breech-loading baloonengepoppeniron.  He said it is NOT recoil-less.

We'll start the events at 9am-ish Saturday morning.

(I'm headed to Atlanta in the am and will be back Thursday; will try to get on-line a little here and there.)

Send me a PM & I'll return with my cell phone #.

Ahhhh the schedule is beginning to take form!

9AM  -  traditional opening shot with (tba) to be touched off by the property owner, Dennis.

NEXT EVENT:  The balloonengepoppenshootin'iron aimed by Lance and perhaps others as resources permit.  Helium and the balloons to be gepopped are on hand.

I'm still in Atlanta, driving back in the AM.

I'm back.

Dale and I will be getting together about 8 for the start about 9am.

Lance will host the balloongepoppenshootin'iron at his place, I'll let him post directions and times (it's nearby).  (I want a cannon ball signed by the pres. if he drops in.)

This will be fun getting to know names, faces and handles all at once.

Time to load the truck.

Overnight the % of rain chance dropped from 70 to 50.

(That means IF we get any we might have to duck one storm.)  We NEED the rain.

Smoke and fire at 9am.

(That is SO comfortable compared to having a fire mission at 0400.)

Yup, the 4th.  (We missed the 2nd year, so they're all 'almost annual' from hear out.)

Sunday afternoon is open, but the range in blacksburg is closer to both of us.

Yup - that's the place.  We need to plan ahead.  This weekend is the Hillsville gun show and flea market - 100 to 300,000 people show up over the weekend.  Saturday I'll be in a match near Richmond.

Yep,  I have about 40 acres south of Lindside WV.  It's up a hillside from a road named "Dunkards Church Road"  Dunno about the big bore stuff, but the golf ball cannon stuff should be fine.  Making some noise is not a problem.  Mortar wise... well... Id have to feel confident they were gonna land nearby and not 2 miles over 'that a way'   Maybe if angled low?

I shoot BP over there now, including my Pedersoli Howdah, and 308 sometimes.  Also various handguns

Anyway, would love to witness a few rounds from a golf ball cannon or mountain howitzer first hand...

It's easy to limit the mortar fire to VERY short distances by shooting high-angle.  Time of flight is usually around 8 seconds (comepared to 12-15 with a 105mm Howitzer shooting 6-8,000 meters - and capable of more).

After the Hillsville fleamarket and gun show we'll PLAN something!

http://www.hillsville.com/fmarket.htm

1/2 a million folks expected!  Pix of cannons and lawn-bombs will be posted.
