don't know what to do
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:27:14 PM »
I picked up a H&R Topper Model 158 , 12 ga today in pristine condition. it's a 28in mod barrel .The colors on the frame are excellent and it has an AL prefix serial number. The best part is that my 28ga barrel fits perfectly. Now my delema, I don't have a H&R 12ga.But...I want to make a shorty and this barrel is to nice to cut. What wolud you all do.

I'd probably keep my eyes open for one that's used/slightly abused to work on and keep the pristine one as is.

I couldn't bring myself to cut a gun that's in fine condition - but that's just me.  It's your gun so you can do whatever pleases you.

Besides, it's a good excuse to buy another gun!

Flint,

I have the same issue, I have a fairly new 26" 410 bore barrel that I need to cut , but I have been wanting to cut it for about 2 years. Before every Rabbit season I plan to cut it, but it hasn't been cut yet. I have it listed for trade now for a shorter 410 barrel. My is a new gun and yours is an older gun in excellent shape, No I willn't cut it. There was a nice  H&R 48 20 ga. on gunbroker acouple of weeks ago. I would have bidded on it , but the barrel had been cut :-[ It's your Gun, but I would wait until all other options were exhuasted before cutting.

Good Luck On Your New 12 ga. Either Way! :)

simple answer, don't cut that nice barrel that fits great. !2 gauge barrels come up pretty cheaply every so often, buy one for $40 - $45 shipped that is less than perfect and cut
away to your hearts content, but keep that nice 12 gauge barrel as it is....<><....:)

I live in the state with the least liberty in the entire US. NY. I guess I'll hold off on shortening this one  and see what developes later on.I'll start checking garage sales ect .as soon as the weather breaks. It 's a sad state of affairs but people are starting to sell just about everything to keep body and soul together.

I know how that is. I too live in NY.  Lot of guns I wouldn't mind having but can't.  The shorty I have I got from a relative that got it off a judge already cut down.  I had the barrel recrowned and fit a stock to it.  Nice and light but I just don't use it too much so I might be selling it.

Flint,

Don't cut that old barrel down. ;)
I've got a 20.5" 12 ga. shorty barrel. I lathe cut it and had a large bead installed. The barrel is duracoated but it's chipping at the muzzle.
Chamber and bore are perfect.

Here's the deal. I'll send it to you to try on your frame. If it fits KEEP IT. If it don't fit send it back. Simple as that. I am not selling it to you... if it fits it's yours FREE. ;D

I've gotten lots of use out of it and now it's time for someone else to get some use out of it.

If you're interested let me know and I'll send it out to you.

I live in albany. The club is about 12 miles south west of here in Clarksville. There is plenty of room to set up camp if you were of a mind to ,and the Club house has all the facilities. There is even a bunk rm in the bsmnt with a full kitchen.
