New Ruger #1 chambered in 460 S&W

I saw in a new ruger catalog that the #1 is now chambered in 460 S&W. I wonder if it would be legal for deer if you trimmed the brass to a legal length?

There's no reason why it wouldn't be legal. I have the unofficial patent on the cartridge name, .460 Dinny Special.  I often stay awake at night day-dreaming of "short-chambering" a 45LC Handi to the Dinny Special, but can't really justify it. The 45LC kills those deer dead and I have yet to shoot one more than 55yds away. I like to give them a chance of trying to wind me.

The legal overall length for any brass used to hunt deer in IN with a rifle is 1.625".

"Rifles with cartridges that fire a bullet of
.357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum
case length of 1.16 inches; and have

legal to use only during the deer firearm season.
Some cartridges legal for deer hunting
include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40 Winchester,
.41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44 Magnum,
.44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester, .45
Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM,
.475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50
Action Express, and .500 S&W."

FWIW= I can't remember where, but some time ago I read that the chambering of the rifle determines it's legality, not what cartridge you happen to be shooting at the time.

I think it has been mentioned in one of our discussion forums that the cartridge is the determining factor. I would almost bet that fireball168 would know the answer and have a definite source for reliable reference.

I was on the DNR (F&W) site the other day and I`m pretty sure it said "Case length" I could be wrong though

The rifle cartridge must:

(A) have a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an inch
(.357) diameter or larger;

(B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths (1.16)
inches; and

(C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred twenty-five
thousandths (1.625) inches


No mention of chamber length whatsoever.

I've been marking all the barrels on the BFG's with the maximum case length just to avoid any "confusion".

I thought you could shoot a .454 casull or .45 lc out of a firearm chambered for .460 S&W......

Last year I was told by the DNR that their people would have a go/no go guage and that was it.  I've never been checked but that's what I was told by the DNR at the Tri-county wildlife area.
