When I threw my hard hat at him,
An' suggested the box where he could stick it.
I walked downstairs an told 'em I was leavin' Bethlehem,
Like I'd seen the Saviour, had tears in my eyes,
Holdin' my hands up an' shoutin': "Amen."

'Cause there ain't nobody gonna tell me what to do.
I spent most of my life a-wrapped up tight,
In somebody else's hand-me-down old shoes.

You might tell me where to go,
But there ain't nobody gonna tell me what to do.

If it was my Karate job I would look for another and leave when the time came.  If it was my main job (mother, wife, and housekeeper)  I would do whatever necessary to keep it, even if it went against my better judgment.  Considering the only way I could be 'fired' from this job would be for Matt to fire me, I would either let him go on with his life, or kill him in his sleep if he was trying to take my kids away, and live happily ever after on the insurance policy.  ;)

"start looking for another and leave when the time comes"...

is essentially what I did when I saw that construction was falling off quickly and I figured I would be loosing my job as a mill work installer.  Unfortunately the only job I could find payed less and comes with no benefits.  So I'm looking for something better but until then at least I'm working and trying to pay the bills.  Construction is still dead here and decent jobs outside of construction for guys pushing 50 are not easy to come by around here either.  I think most companies view us older guys as a liability and don't want to spring for the insurance or spend the time training us because they feel we will leave or retire shortly anyway.

Seeing as over 75% have said they would start looking for another and leave when the time came... I think it is safe to say that we have a group of people here who have "integrity". Now what do you think most of the political incumbents would do? And why are some of you surprised when politicians once elected do not keep their promises?

Glad to see most would choose an honorable option. I've had the choice to keep my honor intact and be unemployed, or give it away just for a paycheck. Living in a borrowed 5th wheel on your in-laws land while you eat up your savings is not something I want to do again, but at least I can look myself in the mirror. And I bounced back quick.

I guess my work experience hasn't been like a lot of folks here. I've not found management to be my adversary, so I never felt like kissing up or finding dirt or doing whatever it takes were necessary options. Guess I've just been blessed in the organizations I've worked for.

I'd pinch myself and wake up from the dream. Since I have no high paying job or low paying one either for that matter it would have to be a dream so just waking from it would end the delima and the decision would be made for me.

Interesting to see many taking the high road here. I've supervised up to 30 employees at times, and all I can say is it is really amazing what some will do to get ahead or stay status quo. In some young minds anything goes in the work place;;;like it is a big reality game...survivor island, the office, or some nonsense like that. If you're a supervisor think twice about keeping these kinds of 'minds' around you...as they are capable of doing whatever and the same to you.

TM, I took a supervisor's job some years ago, and the thing that most amazed me was how adults are really just big children.  And yes, you are correct, if you see someone playing the blame game on someone else, may as well get them out the door...you are next.....

I'm retired now but a few years ago I worked for a Major oil Company. I had a chance for a big promotion but had to eat a little too much of the proverbial sandwhich to get it. I passed on the promotion and when asked why I told them I was never gonna be the president of the company but would always have my self respect. I left the company shortly thereafter, and have not looked back until now, I am happy with my decision. I did leave when I saw it coming!

At 54, I've been pretty much self employed my whole life. Growing up, till the age of 30, I worked for my parents in a beer and wine carryout. Then, been doing gun shows for the last 23+ years. Kinda nice to get up in the morning, look your boss in the eye, tell him what an a**hole he is, then put your pants on and go to work. Unless the ''big O'' steps in, just keep trying to make a buck and pay the bills. gypsyman

There is another option for "integrity".  Send out resume's, contact your network etc.  Then at work make sure you have some kind of documentation for the all the good work you've done there.  All the extra hours and extra work.  You do have copies of your evals from the very beginning right? I keep a word doc every year of "things I've done".  Make sure you can lay out just how much you do above and beyond the call of duty for your company.  Then let them make the call.  Either you are worth more than "joe blow" or you're not.  Either you have made more "money" for the company than "joe" or you haven't.  Nothing wrong with laying out just how much you benefit the company.  If you are good and someone else isn't it's in their best interest to keep you.  If they let you go, now you have paperwork in hand to back up your potential worth to a new employer.  All that being said, sometimes there is nothing you can do right?  Sometimes they just let everyone go... or they close, get bought out, move the company or whatever.  Best wishes...

You're in a better position to land a new job when you're still working. Your resume should always be up to date.

I quit my last two jobs for better ones when there was no danger of layoff. One after being with the company for 13 years. I left on good terms in both cases.

I have what appears to be (for now) a secure position, but I'm going on an interview with another company next week. It's good to keep up on your networking even if you have no intention of taking another job. Keeps your interviewing and salary negotiation skills sharp for when you really need them, and having a job offer on the table can often be used as a bargaining chip with your present employer.

Also, if you don't look around, you'll never land that job where all you do is sit in a hammock testing drinks poured into coconut shells with a pretty girl waving a palm frond to keep you cool.  ;D

I would immediately start looking for another job, or reinvent myself and start a business of my own.

In 1983, I got laid off from my job as a sous chef.  I was 18 and in college.  I couldn't find another job.  A friend had also got laid off from his job doing "plan-o-grams" for a retail chain.  We both had an interest in photography.  He had what I needed to go pro.  I had what he needed to go pro.  So we formed a partnership and did both commercial and portrait photography.  We made good money, too, but our partnership fell apart due to my perception that my partner liked cashing checks but didn't really like working all that much.

I played in a music competition at college around that same time.  A guy heard me play the guitar and offered me a job in a working band.  I took him up on that and worked my way through college as a gigging musician.  I made good money doing that, too.  In fact, I made more annual income as a musician than I did during my first three years of law enforcement.

I got in to law enforcement because I wanted to do something a little more meaningful in life than playing to drunks in bars, at weddings, business parties, and bar mitzvahs.  I could also see that the club scene was moving away from live bands to D.J.'s.

In 1996, I left a career in law enforcement for a job in the private sector.  That gig eneded almost as soon as it began because the company went "tango uniform" and declared bankruptcy.  I played minor league baseball for a season -definitely NOT a high paying gig.  Being 31 years old at the time and a catcher on an unaffiliated A-ball team, with a .241 batting average, I had no illusion of "going to the show."  The baseball season ended and I was really and truly unemployed, but by choice this time.

I looked for a job but few seemed interested in hiring a former cop and minor leauge ball player.  I didn't let that phase me much, however.  As I had done before, I took stock of what I was really good at and what I liked to do, and started my own business based on those strengths and passions.

I had been an instructor at the law enforcement academy part time, and enjoyed teaching.  I pretty much lived to hunt and fish, so combining those things led to licensed and bonded hunting and fishing guide.  I did that as my sole full time means of support until 2001.  In 2001, I started writing for a fly fishing magazine in California.  After doing that for about a year, other managing editors started calling asking me to submit stuff.  By 2006, I went from full time guide and part time writer to full time writer and part time guide.

Then I moved to Oklahoma when my wife got laid off from her gig in Southern California's homebuilding industry.  I did some session guitar work to pay for the move and have enough of a "float" left to start from scratch.  When we got to Oklahoma, a local hospital needed an electrocardiogram technician and I had done search and rescue in my L.E. career and had training in cardiac life support, so I was qualified to do the job.  I took it, and am now an "employee" again, though I no longer work at the hospital.

I still make a few bucks from music, photography, and writing, so if my employment stint comes to a grinding halt, I'll probably be okay, whether I find another "real job," or not.

So yeah, I'd look for another gig.  If I couldn't find one, I'd create one.

I've been with my company for 35 years.  Got one promotion during that time.  I can take an early retirement at anytime now since I am 56.  However, I am paying off my mortgage and helping 3 kids still in college.  I cover two of their medical insurance with family coverage through my company.  If it weren't for a little left on my mortgage, and the kids, I would take an early retirement.  I have a pension and 401(k).  If the market hadn't crashed a couple of years ago, I would have had enough to take the retirement at 55.  I have thought about doing consulting after I retire, but I really want to hunt, fish, garden, and travel.  Actually had the house paid for about 4 years ago, but since I was going to have to work a little while longer to maintain the insurance for the kids in college, the wife wanted a swimming pool, (heated).  Got another mortgage to pay for it and some landscaping.  Oh well got to work a few more.  Work is not bad except for the younger lawyers and bean counters running the company, instead of the business men and engineers that came out of WWII.  They will spend a dollar to save a dime.

As some here have stated, it sort of depends on one's skill and experience level as to what course to take.  In my case, I would have several options.  I could start my own business, which I did in the past when needed, or I could look up some contacts that tried to lure me away from where I was employed.

The primary lesson that I learned in the years when I had to work, was to learn as many skills as possible and build a killer resume.  I also found that it was very helpful to acquire the necessary skills and experience to repair some extremely techinical and expensive equipment that no one else seemed to want to learn.

I retired at a moderately early age, because I was able to financially.  My employer said that I just couldn't do that.  I said, watch me.  I warned them at least a year before I retired and for a while they didn't take me seriously, but after repeated warnings I was finally able to convince them that they'd better get someone for me to train.  By the time they did, I didn't have enough time left to complete the job.  That cost them a bunch and is still probably costing them.

Bottom line is to get as much training and schooling as possible and you shouldn't ever have a problem with employment, or the ability to create your own job.  Oh yeah, and don't forget to put some money aside for the future.
