What would you do if....

You was driving down the highway and for some reason your car started to rev up and would not respond to you trying to brake or bumping it up to neutral?

Turn off the ignition.  Only one notch, not all the way to the steering lock.  Have done it several times with an old Ford truck I owned, and an old 54 Plymouth car back in the 60s.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

There was a news report about a state trooper having the same problem. He and his family died in the crash. He had time to call 911, telling them the car was accelerating and wouldn't brake. Is there something about the newer cars that won't allow you to turn off the ignition? shift to neutral?

The woman on CNBC claims to have shifted into neutral and reverse to no effect, so must not be a direct link between the shift lever and the tranny. Brakes didn't work, so must not be a direct connection between the pedal and a cylinder. She was in a Lexus which makes me think it might have had keyless ignition, so no key to turn.

The more you automate your vehicle, the less manual override options you give yourself.

I agree that with "drive by wire" there are many potential issues that would prevent me from owning a vehicle with those features... Toyota did not introduce key less ignition in the lexus until 2004 and if I am not mistaken the car she had was a 2002 lexus.

I have a suspect Toyota model, I've thought about it. Neutral, sholder of road, ignition off. It has a rev limiter so it shouldn't hurt the engine if the limiter works. A college research unit said the overide shutdown safety system doesn't always kill the engine when it should. I hope I would have time to think to carry out my plan and not be too slow to react. eddie

We have had drive by wire in forklifts for several years, even steer by wire.  While there are problems that have arisen, most of the problem is between the steering wheel and the seat.  One feature on electric lifts and some combustion lifts, is a switch on the brake pedal that not only operates brake lights, but also disengages the drive.  I wonder if automakers would not be smart to look at this simple option......

Most transmissions now are shifted by electric solenoids, but the ony way I can see for the transmission to fail to disengage and the accelerator to fail all at once would be wire harness shorting or the ECU going out.....the harness would be obvious, and it's unlikely the ECU would fail in two areas at once.

I'm not doubting that folks are having trouble, but it seems to me they are panicking and not, as stated, using common sense.

I don't get it... brakes are hydraulic and are separate from engine management systems.  Even a 'vette will slow down a stop if you floor the gas and stomp the brakes.  Brakes are made to be able to stop the car.  Makes me think she was stomping the wrong pedal.  Try it yourself.  Get on the highway, floor the gas and use your left foot to push the brake.  You'll stop.  Worst case, I'd steer to the right and get my car down in the ditch and let mother nature slow me up until the car stopped or until slow enough to bail out.  Farm field and point it across the field.  LEXUS don't go fast cross country.  Stupid people...  didn't even consider their options.  "ooohh I can't stop... should I turn off the car?  Should I drive off the road?  No... I think I'll just keep trying what isn't working until I die..."

Could it be that our vehicles have reached the degree of sophistication where they must have a big red panic button in the middle of the dash?

The fan belt came off my Ford F250 Diesel and i had no power steering or brakes . The truck also had a reostat for a fuel pedel and a switch to tell it to accelerate and one to tell it to slow down . Went thru 3 of the go switches ($60.00 each ) . And yes our vehicles are getting so we can lose control or in some cases others can take over control ?

The university research group said that the problem was created by the wireing system being affected by corrosion or other factors to cause cirquets to short out. eddie

The woman's story does not suprise me a bit. The new ON STAR ad where they switch off a stolen vehicle remotely has had the reverse affect on me ... I don't want a car that has a remote kill switch. In the ad the tahoe safely pulls over to the side of the road - ON STAR doesn't claim remote steering, just kill so it'll never work that nicely. Most likely it will result in the chase vehicle plowing into the tail, or the vehicle drifting into an innocent bystander, vehicle or stationary object resulting in damage to death. Or there's the Mercedes ads that talk about stopping themselves, parking themselves. Real convenient, until it does it while you're driving at speed on a highway for no reason. Had a Saturn that I loved mostly until one day driving around the DC beltway at 75 the automatic seatbelts retracted so my wife and I had no shoulder restraints. SPOOKY. The control unit was under the cup holder, and condensation from my Big Gulp had dripped into the circuits. Just happy the air bag didn't deploy since that control unit was under there too.

I call BS. No way a parking brake doesn't effect the speed of the vehicle. Also, this ladies car was sold soon after. This article on WSJ.com

WASHINGTON —The Lexus sedan driven by Rhonda Smith, who testified in Congress Tuesday about a harrowing incident of sudden acceleration, is still on the road, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In fact, the new owners of the luxury ES350 sedan have reported 27,000 miles trouble-free with the vehicle, according to a NHTSA spokeswoman. Mrs. Smith and her husband sold the vehicle after the incident, in ...

Here is a link to a video of her court testimony.  In it she claims to have tried the emergency brake as well as depress the foot brake with both her feet.

I wonder if she told the buyers of the problem before the sale? If she sues toyota the buyers should sue her for twice as much being as how she KNOWINGLY sold a defective product.
