New Henry 30-30

Anybody try one of these Henry 30-30s yet? I looked at one in the shop...solid heavy weapon, side ejection,,,finished pretty good. Curiously no safety or half cock..just full cock and a transfer bar system. Triggger pull seemed OK.  Shop owner said these come in 45-70...but their web site says, nope, only 30-30. Looks like only the bottom half of the bolt is engaged by locking gate. Not cheap...ard $765. Just wondering if anybody thinks they're worth the $$s.

A guy here at work has a new one.  It jams constantly.  He offered to trade it to me for a Marlin.

I read Chuck Hawks review of Henry H009.  I picked mine up yesterday.  Mounted a Leupold scope today.  I'll try it out soon.  Seems solid.  Trigger's not too bad.  Walnut is nice.  Some of the screws were loose.  So I tightened them up.

A buddy of mine has a Henry 30-30 and thinks it's the greatest thing since apple pie. I have a .44 Big Boy and haven't ever had a problem with it. It's not a Marlin but the action is every bit as smooth as one but the Henry is 2lbs. heavier than the Marlin.

It is heavy.  One of the classic advantages of a lever gun is you can carry it all day in the brush.  The Henry's weight sort of defeats that advantage.

I wanted a heavy lever that had been around a while and was easy to load/unload. So I got a BLR.

I had a BLR for years.  Great rifle.  Locks up like a bolt action.  The trigger could be better.  Also the first cold shot from that thin barrel was a bit off from the rest of the group.  No problem for deer.  My nephew liked to shoot it 230 yards across the meadow.  All his shots were in a pie pan.  So good enough for deer.

A henry that jams? Thats new to me. Possible though. My Dad just bought one and I will say that it is as smooth as can be. Smoother than my marlin 1895. I love the marlin, but it doesnt look as cool as the henry and henry doesnt make a 45-70. Now he also has a commemorative model 94 that is really great. He got his first deer with it this year. Anyway, the 94 is a rougher action but still is great. I like them all man!

Doesn't sound like he is aware of Henry's outstanding customer service. All it takes is one Email
or phone call to to them and they will make it right for him in a hurry.

As long as you can find good prices on used marlins like you do I'd stay away from the Henrys swampy.

My Henry 30-30 shoots straight and always gets the job done for me.  Yes, It's heavy for a carbine.

Trigger is like a professional custom job - light and crisp.

I paid $525. at local shop.  It was NEW in box.

I had a 44 mag henry and it did jam on feed but was told that you have to leaver them fast or they tend to jam. I have a golden boy 22lr and a reg henry in 22 mag and never a problem with them. I have a half doz. marlins and my wish with them is that they were tube load, that loading gate is a finger getter if you are not carefull :)

GL Holmes:

First shot was broadside trotting.  Distance was approx 85 yards.  Animal showed no evidence of the hit.  Second shot slowed him considerably.  Third shot was facing directly at me and the animal toppled over.

Post mortem:

    -  first two bullets struck behind the shoulder and exited ribs ( led the 
       animal by sighting on front edge of shoulder)

    -  third bullet smashed through chest and was discovered in the heavy
       muscle of pelvic region
