280 Pro Hunter or MGM 280 AI
« on: February 24, 2010, 03:43:22 AM »
I found a deal on a Pro Hunter 280 for $225, I have been wanting a 280 AI. Was thinking about a MGM Stainless 28 inches with Select match grade blank. Fluted and built exactly like the Pro Hunter barrel I am looking at $570.  If money isnt a problem which would you buy? I have been thinking about this and havent been able to make up my mind. Maybe you can help.

Twice for the MGM barrel compared to the Pro Hunter?  Without a doubt, I'd go with the Pro Hunter since I don't think an MGM barrel is worth twice the money.

That said, I have a number of Pro Hunter barrels and a single MGM barrel.  I'm very impressed with the MGM barrel but it didn't cost me close to $570 either.

The first target was shot with a Pro Hunter rifle barrel.

Shot with a Match Grade Machine Encore handgun barrel.

Elk hunter I have  a t/c in 280AI and can't say say anything bad about it, really like that caliber easy to fireform and load for. Mine likes heavier bullet weights near max charges, but she does shoot real good. Oh it is a factory T/C barrel. Pick one up from T/C and the difference in monies put it towards a nice scope.

I have both; a heavy barrel 26" encore rifle and as a pistol, a 18" MGM full  barrel I'm getting this weekend. I have shot the rifle a few times finding a load. I am using Nosler preformed brass.

I would like to see the reply posted here by MGM on that one & best left to a bolt gun. On a round like the 280, esp. a round that is not a rimmed case, you need to set back the barrel to have a true AI. Now sending in a 7-08 chamber to recut to 280AI is a diff. animal.

I found a almost new Pro Hunter 280 with rings and bases for $250 shipped. With the 28 inch barrel it should be a smoker. Can anyone tell me what brand of ring/base this is??

Thats them.. I don't think they will work for me. I need it push the scope forward more than these will allow.
