Rounds
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:04:29 AM »
I think people should pick a round then pick a weapon to shoot it . This is a big departure from normal pratice but after spending quite alot of cash i think it would save tons of money. My first centerfire handgun was a 357 mag . After many trades and more years than i care to try and remember I now carry a 357 mag.
Do you pick a round or gun ?

+1. Rather have the best weapon for the round, than a cheap weapon for my best round. Then master that weapon, and master loads for it. I've been all over the popular CF pistol cartridges, and .357 does all I ever did with anything else.

Shootall:  That's what I thought everyone did.  That is what I do anyway.  I pick out a round that I want to use then select a gun that shoots it.   Sometimes the gun does not live up to expectations, and I select another gun, same round.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I was raised around the 30-06 from a WWII Father.

When I decided to stock up after 9/11 The first two firearms I bought were a M1 Garand and Model 700, both in 30-06.

Every firearm Ive bought since uses the same reloading materials as the 30-06.

I don't know - we hear "got a Glock" got a CZ etc often no mention of a round . I admit when getting a carry gun i looked at size first several times then realized its the round .

I usually pick a round first. Then i look for something in that caliber i like. My first was also a 357 mag. I ended up with a Ruger GP100. It fit my hand better than Smith or Colt.

Riflewise I'm .308 Win. all the way. I have had and do have numerous rifles but the "GO TO" is always .308 Win.

With new rifles, like for one of my kids, I do like everyone else and pick a round and then look for a rifle to fit the bill.
Me personally, I'm now all 8mm mauser. I'm so entrenched in that round, I'm starting to develop a German accent when I talk about it.

I go with calibers/round.

9mm
30-06
30-30 - fathers rifle...he gave me around 3K of ammo for it. It is a keeper.
223/5.56
20 gauge
22 WMR - this is only for hunting in SC zone 1 - nothing larger than 22 or birdshot for hogs and coyotes.
22 LR

My wife bought a 380 auto...I have enough ammo for it, but nothing really stockpiled.

Thinking about buying a 12 gauge for ducks, but not really sure I need it. Remington 870 pump I would imagine.

Almost always round first, than weapon.  Except when I have been given a pistol/rifle/shot gun first.

It depends, I don't like bolt guns and prefer levers so that limits what rounds the guns will shoot.  ;)  So I supose I usually pick the gun & then worry about the ammo afterward...

I guess i have fallen into both catagories over the years , but that isnt always a bad thing . I had my eye on my second 357 mag many years back now , Taurus ( older) stainless 6" barrel. I had given myself a week to think good and hard about it , So once decided i went back to the shop and while giving it one more "once over" look I noticed a older model compact CZ 75 9mm , Now while I am not a fan of the 9mm I have heard great things about this weapon from numerous different sources and had never handled one.
Anyhoo , I asked to handle it and Boy that gun felt like it was made for my hand. I ended up leaving that day with both , With out a second thought i would carry that CZ into harms way. Ended up being not only great feeling in the hand but reliable and crazy accurate at 50 yards. While it like any other gun would shoot better with some ammo then others , it would fire anything i threw at it and come back smiling .

Some times the gun chooses the caliber for the shooter  ;D

Sounds like many of you made a mental decision to purchase handguns and rifles.  I had all of the opposite motivations.

I was given my first rifle in 30-30; so that caliber holds a special consideration.

I purchased my first scoped rifle (on consignment in a bow hunter's shop) because it "looked good and felt better", which happened to be a post-64 Win Model 70 Featherweight in 270 caliber, then hand loaded it for accuracy - never looking back.

My first handgun was a gift.  A 'hog-leg' 7" bbl. Ruger Super Blackhawk in convertible 45 ACP and Long Colt, won by my brother...a staunch non-gun owner...for a $5.00 raffle ticket.  It holds a very special place in my collecton.

My 1911 in 45 ACP was a purchase from a fellow NRA Member/at-work associate, sadly dying from cancer, along with his 9mm "Tec-Nine", which I immediately gave away to my friend-hunting host-and a GW in SC because he said it "looked 'Rambo' awesome" and would use it at the Hunter Check Stations for the "visual effect" (hehe).

Following my niece's boyfriend's handgun suicide, I purchased most of her & his handguns, which is the bulk of my arsenal of handguns.

The only conscientious effort to purchase a caliber was my twin 223's (16" carbine and 22" sniper bbls.), which are M-4 clones and built for my son's 18th birthday.  We're having a ball together blowing up ammunition.  Best Father/Son interaction we have had ever and I would recommend this to all Dads.
