WOW prices going up?
« on: February 24, 2010, 01:36:23 PM »
I just called Gander Mountain tonight, to see how much a transfer fee would be, and also to see if they had a few handis available

The guy on the phone told me a new 30-30 when available will be 349.00 :o :o :o and their transfer fee is 75 bucks!

good God! So much for the affordable fun little guns of yesterday, Im going to actually have to "save and plan" to buy one now instead of my usual impulse buy........or FLU SHOT as it may now be reffered as  ;D     I really hope he was wrong.

I think the GM man was insane. Though there are FFL's by me that get $100. I assume that they just don't want to do transfers. Mine used to charge $25. Then the ATF visited them and they went crazy for weeks digging up records. Now they just don't want to bother anymore.

I have two FFL dealers in Vincennes, Indiana that only charge $10 transfer. I bought my .308 handi from impactguns for $259. +$12.00 shipping + $10. FFL transfer.= $281.00 New

I would never pay more than $25 for FFL transfer.. and nothing against GM but their prices are usually high on firearms. At least the one in Terre Haute, IN is../shrug

The Fort Wayne, IN Gander Mountain used to be fairly reasonable on guns and just a little high on reloading supplies. That is not the case now. They have been charging $300 for a plain Jane 44 Mag or 500 S&W for a year and a half now. I know it is to do with the Indiana deer hunting regs, but I for one just do not like taking it up the tail pipe. They wanted $269 for a plain wood stocked 223 over a year ago. I quit looking, it is just disappointing. Primers are available now, but at $5 a hundred they can keep them. Funny thing was, just before our new Prez got elected, Gander Mountain had discounts on all their guns. Right after, the discount signs went down and prices went through the roof. I used to make a regular stop there almost every week, now I just make it once a month or so and rarely buy any thing. I have bought my latest guns a Walmart 35 miles away or at a Dunhams Sporting Goods when they have a sale. I bought a scoped Stevens 200 in 30-06 for less than the cost of a plain Handi at Gander Mountain.

My local FFL (NW Ohio) is $20 to transfer for a purchase.  When I sell a gun (not a handi of course) he ships & transfers the gun to the the buyer's FFL for $20.00

CCI primers at the local gunshop are $32/1000, $3.49/100.  At Bass pro they are $3.49 per 100, I never see bricks of 1,000

My dealer is $25 for most long guns.  $35 for 'state regulated' firearms (hanguns & so called 'assault weapons').

before  you  worry  about a $50  increase  in a handi

consider  these ;;

what  will  a handi  cost in a few years......more  or less?
what  will  that money  you saved  by not buying the handi  buy  next year.....more  or  less??
even  if  the price  goes back to what  it used to cost........
.will  you loose $50  worth  of  enjoyment by  not  having it  now

handis  are  like  gold
just  another  investment......
a place  to  store wealth  that is more stable  than  the dollar

I know there are some out there who do believe they are like gold but that is just not the case. I have a few that I believe are worth thier weight in gold but try and sell them for that and you will see what i mean .Not that I would sell any of mine like that but there are some out there that think they found the bucket of gold when they find an old one. I also think sometimes those folks at GM stores are like the folks a CS @Remington... talk to 3 differant folks and get 3 differant answers. Kurt
Another thing is H&R ain't been able to put guns on the shelf in any #'s since they moved from Gardner. The price increases may infact happen probly more due to not selling as many as before and some bean counter wanting to increase the price to make up for the loss but the bottom line is they still ain't on the shelfs.Kurt

I dont know if they would jump the prices up that high to make up the money, and like Ive said I sure hope that fella is wrong.

I do worry about the 50dollar jump, alot of the reason I and many others enjoy these rifles is because they are inexpensive, we can cheaply play around with various cartridges without investing a ton of money, not only that but its fun to "personalize" them in a way I dont think I try on a more expensive rifle.

And the kicker is, they are shooters, at least all mine have been, rugged and reliable, but going up in price you are starting to get into the same range as many other rifles, ie savage that
would eat up even more of the market for these.

how many times have you been on a forum, somebody asks about a handi and the replies are....save up just a little bit more money and you can get an accurate boltgun, well it may  just  change to..... get the bolt gun its the same price (or cheaper  :o

I like my cable TV/internet but if the price jumped 20% i dont think Id think about it that way ether, will I enjoy it now, yes, will I worry about what itll cost in a year, yes but during that time Ill be looking for a more affordable way to get that same enjoyment, ie a dish or god forbid I start reading books ::) ;D

to be honest, A handi is not the best investment as far as rifles go, I dont really see the resale value of one, last one I found was used for 140.00, and I can guarantee he didnt get more than he paid in that trade

as far as keeping them on the shelves, around here finding the popular chamberings is fairly easy, getting harder, I can find 223,243,204 sometimes 357,44mag and there are a number of BC's still around. But if you wanted to order one, nope, not going to happen, not from the big boxes or alot of the mom and pops.

Ive had 3, on order for a long time, still none in stock from any of those places, trying to find a TDC in 12ga, its been longer than I can remember, but the toppers/pardners seem to be in good enough supply, unless you want a 20ga.

Dunno, mind boggling. either way I may just have to jump at that handi, pay the money, and enjoy it.
