Only you can answer that, because you know the conditions and situation where you will be using the set up.
Long ago i used bits and pieces of broken tripods, such as heads and clamps, to improvize set ups. Today, you can find tripods good enough for what you are asking at any large store, for about $30 or so.
Whether you have an angled scope or a straight scope also makes a difference.
I do understand what you mean. Recently, i looked through a BSA scope and was surprised how, at low power, it was very sharp and bright and i could see holes well at 100 yards. This was an older BSA. However, it was mounted on a tiny table top tripod that was abosultely useless: it took me forever to focus and find the target and it wobbled. The zoom on the BSA was junk, but at 20X it was good.
