Spotting Scope Set-Up
« on: February 24, 2010, 01:58:21 PM »
Does anyone have a Handi idea for setting up my new spotting scope I have coming?
I don't like the little tippy tri-pods that come with some of them and was wondering if anyone has a creative idea for mounting one so it's stable for range work.
I find myself having trouble seeing 22LR holes at 25yds. I've been spotting for the boy with hand held binoc's and it ain't working out to good.
Kind of like glass'n for game with your scope on the rifle...Not good!

Shoot a 45/70!
Big holes are easier to see

These are pretty stable, and expensive.

I use a photography tripod with a fluid head, etc.  It's used for my spotting scope as well as my chrono.

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to think out of the box and see if anyone had used spare parts to design there own stand or post attachment. -g

Only you can answer that, because you know the conditions and situation where you will be using the set up.
Long ago i used bits and pieces of broken tripods, such as heads and clamps, to improvize set ups. Today, you can find tripods good enough for what you are asking at any large store, for about $30 or so.
Whether you have an angled scope or a straight scope also makes a difference.

I do understand what you mean. Recently, i looked through a BSA scope and was surprised how, at low power, it was very sharp and bright and i could see holes well at 100 yards. This was an older BSA. However, it was mounted on a tiny table top tripod that was abosultely useless: it took me forever to focus and find the target and it wobbled.   The zoom on the BSA was junk, but at 20X it was good.
