All this means is that GM had a product that they couldn't make a profit on.

I would love to be in the meeting were some people pitched the Hummer.  I just can't believe GM thought the Hummer would be a big money maker.  ::) ::)

There is a reason the Camery has been the number one seller for so many years.  GM needs to get the head out of the a$$ and get a grip.  Joe Public just is not going to spend the kind of money it takes to buy a Hummer.  So the Hummer brand dying is no surprise is it???

Maybe joe public won't but our government sure did.
I hear a small private firm is also interested but their government shot it down.
At least they were able to dump Saab.

I was listening to some of the morning news shows yesterday and one of them was saying the the Hummer had been the most profitable per vehicle line for GM.

May well be, profit per unit vs units sold compared to their other models.
Taken in to account the cost of R&D and the start up cost for tooling and labor vs number of units sold I would be inclined to dispute that claim.

GMs truck line has always been a main stay of the company along with their full sized car line, BELAIR-IMPALLA & BUICK over the years.

I always liked the way they looked. Just couldn't warm up to the 5 or 6 miles per gallon.
That thing was begging for a small 4 cylinder diesel. Probably would have got somewhere around 20-25 mpg.
And with the addition of a turbo should have outperformed the gasser.

Never really understood why Detroit never tried it. ???

The mil. hummers are diesel I believe. My brother worked on them in the service. Think they may not have had turbos?

Loved their wide wheel base and low center of gravity while I was in the service, would never own one in civilian life.
and whoever at Hummer thought the H3 ws going to be a big seller should have been canned a long time ago.

i agree cabin.. heck i seem to remember this country selling china several thousand f 16 jet fighter bombers,, not too long ago..if thats not a sellout ,i don t know what is..
 im always amazed at the new top line weapons available to our fighting forces,that are  shown on the tv ..was a time when that type stuff was top secrete..slim

It did start out as a military transport. Had a diesel engine in it. My nephew drove one back in the '90's when he was in the corp. And, you could get them with a diesel engine in civilian version. Talked with a couple guys that had one. Considering what you could pay for a 4 wheel drive pick up with a diesel, the Hummers weren't that much more expensive. gypsyman

The military HMMV is still built by AM General Not GM, GM never built true hummers, only hummer look alike based on the Suburban, Tahoe, and S10 Blazer, and the sell to China wasn't the true Hummer built for our troops.

The military paid for the H-1 , The H-2 was mostly Tahoe drivetrain with a few changes . Joe public realized that they could have same offroad capablity with a less expensive Tahoe maybe , hum . Seems the military is getting away from hummer also ?

The H2 is a pretty decent off-pavement vehicle.  I'd like it better if it were solid front axle / solid rear axle / coil spring suspension like an old Range Rover, Defender, or Land Rover Discovery, or Jeep TJ/JK Wrangler.  But for being IFS, the thing works well.  Plenty of room for camping gear and hunting equipment, good approach /departure / ramp breakover angles, good ground clearance.

If I had the money that cars and light trucks that I like go for new these days, I'd seriously consider an H3 since my long cherished TJ Jeep just went "tango uniform" a few days ago.  I can get to my deer hunting spot near my Oklahoma home just fine in a Camry, 'cause its right of a paved road.  But places like that aren't the limit of my hunting and angling horizon.  Some of the places I want to go, a Camry wouldn't.  Neither would a "soft-roader" like a Subaru, Honda Pilot, Ford Escape, or similar.  I need real, honest to goodness low range four wheel drive capability like my TJ had before the motor gave up the ghost.

The H3 would provide the capabilities I want.

It'll go where it will fit.  It won't fit on plenty of trails that my TJ would waltz over unscathed.  I need to correct my prior post, though, because the Hummer I would consider buying isn't the obese H2, but the H3 on the Colorado/Canyon platform.  F-250's are nice.  Not the right tool for the jobs I want doing, though -lockers or not.

The newer Hummer vehicles weren't even the same vehicles used by the government.  The H2 and H3 models were civilian luxury cars built on large pickup truck frames.  All they really were were a status symbol - one for idiots at that.  For the price there are smaller, more efficient, faster, better looking, etc cars out there.  The reality is the original hummer (of which these are not the same thing) was built for rugged military use - NOBODY uses these for that and so all of it's virtues are wasted.

If you want an expensive status symbol, go get a Porsche (or a Corvette if you wanna stay GM).  They'll go faster and will look a lot better doing it.  If you want an offroad rugged vehicle - go get any of a number of good 4x4's out there for much cheaper (my dad used to have an old jacked up '77 Chevy Scottsdale 4x4 that he paid $2000 for back around 1992 or so that would go into and out of any off-road situation I could imagine).

I don't like the way they look although I'm sure they are excellant off road. My boss has an H2 and he likes it. I don;t care for the way they look. As someone else said earlier, the civilian version is not nearly the same as the military version. Go with a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel if you want a real truck practical truck.
