a terribly sad thing..still not much different than other animals, that attack trainers ..
it happens with dogs to elephants .. we talking an animal that can kill..invariably
these animals do attack..the only problem i have is that they try a depict these animals as safe..
the experts just don t understand animals minds as much as we think..terribly sad ..but i guess the lady died doing what she loved to do..
i had a fella showing me his bull dog ..he was just so proud..he looked at me with total dismay as i moved my face out of the way,, just inches from the the dogs jaws..he said it never ever acted like that before..
id made the mistake of looking the dog strait in the eye as i stood admireing him..
its why my kids are discouraged from choosing a pet dog thats large, for my grand kids..any size may do it unexpectadly..
too much is not known about thier mental make up..at least if its a small dog pet ,,the dog may not be able to do that kind of damage..
a friend of long ago,, had a pet ferret that was just setting on his lap as the guy watched tv,,like he did every night....then the ferret jumped an grabbed his nose.. nearly took it off....always be ready for the unexpected when working with animals,..jmo slim

Notice how the name Killer Whale has been resurrected for this occasion. The politically correct name has long been Orca. Do you happen to know whether it was a tragic accident or an obviously deliberate attack?

i exspect they will speculate until the subject is no longer news..
now n my post i may have given the impression i didn t like dogs..
i was raised the first 6 years of my life by an old pit bull.
i owened raised them an australian cow dogs,for good many years,as an adult..
i quit selling pits when i found i couldn t no matter how i tried,, sell the buyer on the qualities that made the bull dog useful an worth having .. it always became a part of thier ego .. i decided no matter how much i admired thier sometimes infinite courage an tenacity ,,inevitably it brought out the worst in a man..
so i decided it just must be for the bad to ownum an god must disapprove of it..
simplistic view mabe.. but im a simple man..they not simple every day dogs ..
good size man can whip a german shepherd or dob,,if he knows how an if he can stand pain enough to keep his head about him..a 70 lb pit bull is different story..they vary more than people know ..but some can have you in shock inside of a minute or two..not a good choice as a guard dog..
don t care if the dog whisperer thinks hes in control ..i know what is just under the skin of the most gentle pit bul..unless hes been messed up young by some idiot who made him prove himself at 3 months..
at least the line i bred,,was this way..
the dang pepsi generation ofem that are taught an bred to rage at the end of a chain ..at people no less ..
thats why i quit them for good...
to put it bluntly.. the old time pit bull that showedf a tendancy to go after people or bite,,wouldn t live through sunset..
i shoulda stayed away from the subject as it drew me closer to the criminal eliment than i ever meant for it to.nuff said slim
ps mabe if i choose to be a hermit in my older age ..i might own one again..if you attacked by a bear ,couger or pack of yotes..they got a little surprize coming if you got my type pit bull with you..they work quietly as they not trying to scare the animal off..bred to fight they want the pack or what ever to come on in an get some o what they serving up that day..they may get killed but with my line ,,the couger better make sure he is dead an not just knocked out..

Whether, or not the orca attacked the woman viciously, or in a playful way, the result is the same. I think this validates my skepticism of those who purposely put themselves in harms way when it comes to large wild animals; those who go swimming with sharks, kayaking with whales, camping in bear country and so on.

In my particular case, I try very hard to avoid kayaking around sea lions. Sometimes they will pop up unexpectedly, but I never get in their space when I know they are about.

What bothers me about this story is that this woman was not the first death connected to this particular Killer Whale. Seems the animal is worth too much money to Sea World; worth more than three human lives.

(Of course dressing like a seal, which the whales are programmed through millions of years of evolution to hunt and eat, probably doesn't help things either.)

Yea this whale has been envolved with 3-4 deaths, how many does it take?
Only certain trainers were allowed to work with this whale ,BECAUSE HE
WAS HARD TO HANDLE.
Big animals don't understand how easy it is to kill humans and will kill you
when they are playing. When i was 15-16 years old we had a bull that
weighed over 2000lbs i used to play with him, i would rubb his head and back
he would act like a cat i would jump on his back, he would follow me all over
the place. My dad set me down one day and told me about an older man that played with his bull like that and the bull killed him just playing with him.
my dad took to caring a shovel in the pasture and would swat the bull when he got close. This bull never acted like he was mad or wanted to fight, but
how does a 200lb. man PLAY with a 2000lb. bull.

I was at a state park that had a buffalo herd and we found it. It was in a huge fenced in area but the herd was right near the fence. Some yahoo was standing too close to the fence and the enormous bulls in the her were huffing and moving like they were going to come crashing through the fence. The guy just stood there looking. At about that time I got there with my kids, we just walked over a rise and I saw what was happening and ran the kids over behind some big rocks we could hide among if we needed to. That was a scary situation. Those big buffalo are maybe 6 feet at the shoulder.

Why do humans continuously see a need to try and domesticate or keep in captivity

i won t be surprised when the big news is ..dog whisperer found dead in his lot full of pit bulls..
i hope it doesn t happen though..he seems like a pretty nice fella..he just don t know quite as much as he thinks he does about pit bulls an what lurks just below the skin.. i personally love the qualities that the old time pit bull had.. this new dog , bred to be pets is not the same as the old time dogs were..this new pit bull is tantamount to keeping a tiger or something on a chain that tied to a tree by a shoe lace..jmo slim
ps.. plus bottum line ,,they don t have the deep courage an willingness to fight until the end,that some of the old dogs had..i had a good friend who just about begged me to bring old black jack over to take care of a bunch of dogs that ran wild around his place..black jack took care ofum ..but the guy stayed mad at me for doing what he ask me to do..for a good while..at least he understood why i didn want to,, an shouldn t have done it in the first place..lesson learned by myself.. i was young an didn t know any better.

Arn't these whales on the endangered list or something? I know I could go the rest of my life and not see a whale show. And, ya can't really blame the whale, he's only doing what comes naturally. Feel sorry for the trainer, but I believe they said she had 15 years experience. Must have known the risks. Wonder if after this many years they could let him back into the wild? Better idea!!Dee's always claiming he can take just about anything with his 'ol 30-30. Wonder what whale burgers taste like? gypsyman

I am continually amazed at the stupidity of the so called animal lovers amongst us. Because they love and care for them so much they really must fool themselves into thinking the animal won't hurt them. They are WILD!!! They need to stay in the wild where they belong. You can't live with bears like your some kind of "whisperer". How arrogant is that. God put the animals here on earth for us to use to survive. We are not subbordinant to animals contrary to the animal rights wacos out there. I wonder if they are going to charge the whale with murder? Will they then appoint it a public defender? If it is found guilty where will it go to prison? Oh wait it already is there!!! They came out with a statement that they weren't going to punish the animal. What if they did? Would they swat it on the butt with a rolled up newspaper? They need to stop drinkin the koolaid. Steve

Yep ..I agree .. you can't blame any animal for doing what it was born to naturally do in the wild. Sorry for the trainer, but she should'nt have put herself in that position. And the word trainer I use loosely. Circus trainer is probably a better phrase.
As Sea world was not training them for reinroduction into the wild , they were circus trainers taking them through unnatural behaviors to preform at the folly of us humans amusment.
I am a firm believer places like sea-world should be shut down. In general , All healthy wild
Animals in captivity should be rehabilitated back to the wild. If you are going to keep animals in captivity
Keep the ones that unfortunately cannot make the transition back in a sanctuary of some sort and utilize
them to provide education. And do not allow them to breed in captivity.

We have a state licensed rehabber for Birds.. Her goal is to reintroduce injured wild birds back into the wilds of our state.
While rehabbing these birds , she provides as minimal human contact as possible to ensure the animals remain wild. They are not sea world "human playthings" to be put on display and in shows. They are unfortunates that for example got caught up in barb wire fences , or had a run in with a car etc.. and they are being given a second chance at recovery to remain wild and be reintroduced back into their natural habitat.

The only birds she is allowed to keep are the injured ones that cannot make the transition back but have recovered.
example an owl with one eye that can no longer fly well enough to hunt. The owl now travel around our state visiting
schools to educate kids on Owls rather than having to be destroyed. Also , the owl will not be bred in captivity , that is not the goal to create a whole bunch of pet owls.

Orcas, or killer whales, as they are called, are not whales at all but, economy sized dolphins, and this one in particular had a record. He now has 4 kills painted on his cowling. Anyone stupid enough to get in the water with one of these things, man or woman, gets what they asked for. I feel bad for the family of the deceased, but as far as the deceased? She fell victim to the common, and often fatal mistake of believing her own BS.
The funny thing about all this, is there is not one single documented incident of an Orca harming a human in the wild, but in a small pool of water, it's eventually gonna happen. Have you ever been to a zoo, and watched the elephant, or the bear swing back and forth for hours in their cage. Talk about emotional problems being penned up. I would too after a while.

Orca isn't being "politically correct" - it's just the name. Orcas are not whales at all - they're an incredibly large species of dolphin. They have been known to attack/hunt actual whales for food, and the Spanish name for them translated roughly to "whale killer" as a result of that. Latin-based languages tend to flip the noun and adjective order compared to English though, and so lots of people who spoke English mistranslated it as "Killer whale" rather than "Whale killer". A few centuries later the name has stuck. As said though, they're not even whales.

yea dee ..that last sentence in your post of the 28th ,,hit the mark..
the old time zoos were pretty bad.. i guess theres some left around ..but don t
know of any close around here though..im right proud of our n.c. zoo in ashboro ..
they try as hard as they can to provide natural habitat..
still handleing the undomesticated animals carrys a certain danger.
even domesticated animals carry a risk..
thats why i always advise my kids to pick an small pet for thier kids..
at least if he comes undomesticated for some reason.. we talking mabe a bad bite..
not a child being found dead..
i heard of a guy,, that owned as gentle a pit as you can find..only problem was the dog went crazy when a lawn mower was cranked..guy mowed his lawn an left his dog in the house,with his kid..
the rest of the story is not good ..but the dog went wild in the house, with the mower running out side..
nobody heard the kid screaming.. i doubt the man is over it yet..

I know I'm gonna catch some heat over this remark, but oh well. I have no earthly idea why someone would want a pit bull for a pet. I can sorta see'em for things like hog huntin but, to keep'em in a neighborhood is not smart. They are not welcome on my place and will be shot on sight. In my two decades of law enforcement I cannot begin to recall how many of those sweet little dogs went off the deep end, and killed some one's pet, livestock, or maimed someone. I also can't remember how many times I dropped a hammer on one because of it, and was glad to do it.
The same with wild animals. Some folks need to wake up, and realize that wild critters want nothing to do with them. As I said earlier. I feel bad for the woman's family but she her self was and idiot, and she, and the Orca proved me right.
