I stopped by my gun smiths yesterday, while he was on the phone I was looking at the consignments on his rack. i saw a single shot 12ga with the tang lever break open. Nice rounded pistol grip stock wood was in decent condition. Well It turned out to be an H&R and the tag said $75. The serial # was A13xxx. Got to work and checked the FAQs and according to the letter code it's a 1940. My gunsmith said it had been there quit a long time. I asked him to call the guy and offer him $60, but I'm thinking since it's a 1940 and everything seemed to work on it should I just go ahead and do the $75 and have a piece of H&R history or should I hold out for a week or so and see what he says about the $60.

I like the tang so I would just buy it. Now if he is your dedicated gunsmith, he may deal with you.

it's a consignment and he only make 15% on those. So at 75 he only makes 11.15 at 60 he only makes 9.

   Just buy it and get it over with. You know darn well you want it. Wish i could find deals like that. Guess i don't look in the right places.

So I figured I'd give it until my gunsmith was done with the drilling and tapping and mounting the scope rail on my 20ga smooth bore slugger before I'd buy the 1940 12ga. Well he finally got that done and the 12ga was still there. He told me that it had been on his shelf for close to 10 years now, and the guy that put it on consignment scammed him out of some parts for an Ithaca 37 and has never returned his calls. He doesn't even know if the guy is still alive. Anyway I got it for $60 and my gunsmith said if the guy ever calls about it he will give him his money minus the cost of the parts the guy never paid him for. The wood is in really good condition. Barrel and receiver are what you expect for a 70 year old gun, it has just the tiniest bit of side to side play play when locked up. It has a 30" barrel and says 12ga choke. I'm assuming that it's a full choke, But does anyone know how these were choked, full or modified?

If a dime won't fit in the muzzle, it's full choked, IIRC 12ga choke = full.

a little strip of shim-stock should help it lock up tighter and make any side-to-side play go away or at least less noticible. enjoy your good old gun, bubba.

I saw that picture and it looked just like the old 12 gauge I've got.

Mine has Iver Johnson stamped on the side of the receiver, but it looks identical to yours.   Wonder if there is a connection between Iver Johnson and Harrington & Richardson?

I did some research and though they were made during the same time period they were two seperate companies.

I got mine out and compared it to the picture and they look identical in every detail!.....Strange?

It even locks up tight, but is a little loosey goosey side to side.

I was at a place called Hesselsons near where I live and was looking through thier used racks and saw an iver Johnson 20ga with a real small youth stock on and thought that it was another model 1900. They only wanted $69 for it, but I needed some 777 ffg and didn't have the money to do both. Who ever designed the gun may have sold the rights to both companies.
