redfeild or nikon prostaff
« on: February 25, 2010, 10:41:10 AM »
Im looking at buying one or the other. bear in mind I'm used to cheap bushnells, simmons, nc star type scopes. This will be the most I ever spent on a scope. both seem to be had for around $170. I'm looking for the most dependable thing (stays zeroed)to put on my most expensive deer rifle I've owned for under $200.

I'd say go to a store that has both, look through them, play with them a little, and decide which one you like best because you would really be splitting hairs to find much difference between the two in both durability and optical clarity.  The Redfields are really new so you're not going to be able to find too many people that will testify to durability, but they are made in the same facility as a Leupold VX-1 so they should be great.  The Redfield warranty is also the same as Leupold which is as good as it gets.  The real advantage to the Prostaff is that they've been around long enough that you can find some deals on new scopes on ebay, or pick up a used one at a really reasonable price.  You might also consider a Sightron S1 or a Weaver Classic V or 40/44.  I've got both of those as well as a Nikon and they are all great scopes for the money.

I have not used the new Redfield scope, but being that its made by Leupold, and carries a life time warranty carries a lot of weight.  I truly believe Leupolds make the most durable, affordable scopes around.  Hopefully that carries over to the new Redfields.  All the big distributers list scope refurbs and blemished models for sale, but their never Leupolds...least that Ive ever seen.

I was not aware that the Redfield was made by Leupold, so that changes my proposed answer. No choice from that perspective, with the warranty and the Leupold name in its corner I would say Redfield. I have several Nikons and I like them for the value, but they aint Leupolds, and I have a few of those as well.

Leupold all the way. BUT its not one of your choices...
Yes Redfield is now owned and made by Leupold. I havent had one in my hands but will soon. I have an centimental old 2 3/4 power Redfield with a broken objective lense that I wanted to get fixed... but its simply too expensive. Redfield is offering people like myself a rebate to trade in my old scope on a newly produced Redfield and this is what I will be doing.

If you would consider a Leupold, I would recomend a used VXII or VARI XII. If its a worry return it to the factory for a check-up. (its free, sans the shipping.) Personally, I have many Leupolds and most have beed purchaced used. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM! You can also have the reticule changed while its there if you like.

Plain truth is either of your choices (Redfield or Nikon) will likely be just fine for you. I simply prefer Leupold (now Redfield too). Someone else here said it but I REALLY like it, "I cannot afford not to buy Leupold."

I've had the new Redfield for a couple of weeks and I really like the glass. It is pretty close to a Nikon Monarch I have and what a warranty for a scope in that price range. Mine is 3x9x40 Accu Range and thinking of getting the 2x7 Accu Range also.

looked into info about redfeilds connections with leupold, and it looks like leupold bought the name, and left the redfeild operation just how it was there in oregon. They added nothing to redfeild but the leupold warranty.  I did see some leupold scopes @ $200, but are they going to be any better in that price range than the two affore mentioned? Also, I did not know you could send scopes to leupold and have them "checked over". Even change reticles? Fer'real?

Yup, Momma wouldn't like it much if I started lying' now...  ::) ::)

I have sent in a couple when my "groups" opened up and I suspected it to be scope related, it wasn't the case, but its was nice to know for sure. I have sent back half a dozen or so for reticule changes too.

$200 for the scope models I mentioned is too high, 120-160$ is closer to reality... keep looking.

The above is incorrect.  Purchase what you like, but for the sake of accuracy,  Redfields were never made in Oregon, they were made in Denver Colorado.  Leupold is the company that is from Oregon, and that is where the new Redfields are being manufactured, on a Leupold assembly line.  And CW is telling the truth, Leupold will change reticles on scopes returned to them.

NO COST for the inspection, just tell them its new to you and you suspect or are worried about its accuracy. Its part of there lifetime warranty!

Different reticules in different models cost different prices. My VX II & VARI XII 2x7 and 3x9's have run be about 70$ to my door.

There are very few scopes on the market that are tougher than the Nikon Prostaff.  The new Redfield is a complete unknown.

I bought a pro staff 2x7 last summer and am not impressed with its low light capabilitys. The 3x9 buckmaster did a much better job. I know nothing about the new redfields. the old ones were decent scopes. dont expect wonderful optics in leupolds lower priced lines either. When you get into a vx11 vx111 or even the older vari x 111 then they are much better. In my opinion in that price range the hands down best bargin is a 3200 bushnell.

Yes for twice the money the Bushnell 3200 is a better scope.  A 3-9x40 will always gather more light than a 2-7x32.

My bad, The original founder John C. Redfeild was FROM Oregon. The other bit of that info was second hand off other forum. Fellow said he was at a Leupold exhibit and got the info there. don't want to be one to spread rumors, so sorry if info was incorrect. I'm gonna be looking for an old leupold this weekend at local gun shops, but now the bushnell 3200 has been thrown on the table. I thank you gentlemen for the excellent info, and am still listening.

I have an old Redfield and it`s been great for a lot of years. The need for a new scope came up and after looking at more than a few ,I went with the Nikon ProStaff.

I may be wrong but I do not think that you can get reticle or parallax changes from Leupold on the Redfield line.

I didn't see where anyone said they'd swap reticles on the Redfield, just the Leupold.  ;)

Here's Leupold's custom shop where you can see what reticles are available for each model and their cost.

I disagree. The 2x7x32 has a slightly larger exit pupil than a 3x9x40 at max magnification. The Buckmaster is a better made scope than the Prostaff. Compare the Prostaff and Buckmaster 3x9x40 scopes in the field and the $20 extra for the Buckmaster will be easily seen well worth it.

tdn  posted on another thread that midwesthuntersoutlet.com has the Redfield 2x7x33 with Accu Range for $140.98 to your door. $10 less without Accu Range. IMO these scopes are more in the Buckmaster class than Prostaff. What a price for an American made scope with a great warranty.

I didn't say Leupolds weren't good scopes.  There are so many really good cheap scopes on the market these days & they are well worth a look.  Redfield went out of business because they created a huge chemical spill they couldn't afford to clean up.  That's a shame but they did make a scope that was as good as Leupold in their day.

You can get a Nikon Team Primos for $199 from SWFA.  The Team Primos has better glass than the Buckmaster.  SWFA also has Sightron SII 3-9x42's for $199.
