I finally found a Model 24 S&W in 44 Spl.
« on: February 26, 2010, 08:14:03 AM »
At a gun show last weekend I found a revolver that I have been looking for. A Model 24 S&W in 44 Spl.
It is a real beauty. Like new condition. It came with a nice set of Herrett grips instead of the factory grips.
This is a welcome addition to my S&W 696 & Ruger Flat Top in 44 Spl.
It will also fit in nicely with my other S&W & Colt Target revolvers.
Can't wait to give it a workout once the snow & wind stop.

I have a soft spot for the 44 special, developed reading Skeeter Skelton and Elmer Keith back in the day. My packing gun is a 4" 24-2, one of the guns made in the 80s. I have 2 1950 targets in 44 special also. I have wondered about the L frame 44, how does it shoot? Is it good in double action? What it the recoil like? Shotgunner

I've always loved the 44SPL. Shot alot of SPL's in my 44 mag's over the years. Always wanted a 1950 Target in 44SPL but prices always seemed too high. On my way back from vacation years ago stopped at a gun shop and there was this S&W 696. Love at first sight. It had a partridge front sight instead of the ramp, that sold me.
It shoots great with 7.5 grs Unique with my Keith cast bullets, it will keep them in a 1 1/2" group all day. Not much recoil. The action was very smooth when I got it, but I put in a Wolff  11# spring now the single & double action is very slick. It's a great carry gun. Finding one of these 696's now is very hard and the price will floor you.

I was at an auction last month and bought a gun without looking at it first. It was a Charter 44 bulldog. I did get it cheap, but someone had cut the barrel down and removed the front sight. Today at a gunshow I saw another Bulldog, with the barrel cut and no front sight. What are the odds. I am going to silver solder a sight back on the one I have and sell it. Quite a small package wrapped around a pretty big cartridge. I will watch for a 696, myabe some day. the 630s are the same story, very high prices. Shotgunner
