243 bull barrel .... bullets tumbling
« on: February 27, 2010, 06:28:07 AM »
Ive tried 4 different bullets ....2 factory bullets and 2 reloads the reloads were 85 gr. serria and 100 a-max .... anyway i went out and shot a mixture of the 4 loads and I had a lot of tumbling ...I'm not sure what is causing this.... any info or things to look for and what bullet weight is best suited for the HR

Thanks

First thing I would do is stick a bullet in the muzzel and make sure that H&R properly marked the barrel.  I recall a short time ago that someone got a mismarked barrel chambered for something it wasn't supposed to be.  Larry

I have a .270 Win H&R that has an oversize bore, so Larry's suggestion is a good one to check. If the 85gr loads are tumbling, there's a problems with the bore or maybe a bad crown, sounds like a problem for H&R to solve if you don't want to try the crown touch up in the FAQs. I think the Amax is a 105gr bullet, Hornady doesn't list a 100gr, it may not stabilize in the 1:10" twist barrel, and there have been some unsubstantiated reports of slower twists in H&R 243 barrels. I'd be contacting H&R and make arrangements to have it returned if you can't get it to shoot 2" or under at 100yds with factory ammo, ask them to cover return shipping too, toll free (866)776-9292.

I think if you look on the A-Max box it will say it need  1-8 or 1-9 twist.

Check the faq's and determine your twist rate. Remington tried 1-12 on the early 6mm expresses and they wouldn't shoot 100 grs. The 85's should shoot in about anything.

if it was just the A- max i wouldn't be worried but all 4 different bullets... Ill check the size of the bore and the crown tom or so ....since i became disabled not as easy just to run out to the garage and the safe...
