My 12ga Shorty Went on a killing spree!!!! Pics Added
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:49:33 PM »
I started the morning off by moving the 4 wheeler to get the boat out and the rats start running.  So I grab the 12ga shorty and some bird shot.  I got 2.  That's all I saw.  It blew them to pieces at 10-15ft.  I took the boat out to do some hog hunting.  I had my shorty, some remington slugs, and some 00 Buck.  I spent about 2 hours going up the bayou with the trolling motor when I heard one run.  I saw her standing in the tall grass about 50 yards out.  I let a slug fly.  Oh no! I missed.  She's gone.  Wait there she is.  I get on the bank  and creep up to about 30 yards this time loaded with 00 Buck.  I center my peep site on the side of her head and pull the trigger.  She dropped like a sack of potatoes.  I load back up and walk over.   2 Hogs laying there dead.  One had a hole the size of a coke can just behind her head.  I just got done cleaning them and icing them down.  Just thought I'd share.  It's been a long day.

It was a good day. I gave one of them to an old guy I used to work with who has been wanting one.  I showed him my shorty and now he wants one too!!!! I think I spread the H&R illness.

I had a rat in the chicken pen this past fall and I used my 12 ga shorty to take care of it. Some #6 shot in the head from about 8 feet did the trick. :D :D

I'm definitely not in New England.  I'm way down in South Mississippi.  By the way when you shoot a mouse with a shotgun all you see is a crater.  If you look around you will eventually find a ball of ground meat and fur.

Good shootin'!  and good story! Yea there are some advantages to the heat and mosquitos we have to deal with in the summer, down south. One is we dont freeze in the winter!

stumpjmpr,

Nice day fishin' I mean huntin'. ;)  Got room for an old guy in your boat next time out?  The best I can do hunting from my aluminum boat is to occassionally whack a water snake with a paddle or stick a carp with an arrow.  DNR up hear don't take kindly to shooting and motoring at the same time.

Joe,

I'm in south Ms right on the La state line. It's a smooth bore.  I average about 3" groups at 50 yards if I remember right.  The SB1 Reciever shouldn't be a problem.  I believe its one of the stronger shotgun frames out there.  Factory ammunition is loaded to be safe in all modern firearms.

Rusty,

My only concern with the mice was a follow up shot.  Since, I was shooting a single shot I had to be certain the first shot counted, if not I could have been mauled to death.

Shorties  make for great shotguns  once you get used to em. After you get to know it's likes and dislikes , you've got a companion for life. Good shooting and good hunting. There are many more hogs in your future.
My H&R is not my first Shortie.I had built a double gun, which over the years took quite a few deer.My son took his first deer with it,and a few more.So I have since given it to him. He now swears by it and leaves his pump gun at home.I love my H&R TRACKER 1  20GA , but I  just had to build a 12ga shortie. I can't wait till the snow is gone so  I can take it out to play. Then comes the long wait till deer season.

Flnt,

Your right they are great guns.  I'm already thinking about building another shorty.  I really want 2 more.  I want them both to have screw in chokes.  One with sights the other without.  I want a rabbit gun and for buckshot.  You can carry these things all day without the weight getting to you like a pump gun.

I envy you guys that have hogs to hunt. I've always wanted to. I've raised them all my life but we don't have any feral hogs around so I've never been able to hunt them - except once. Had a nutty bred gilt that got out of a confinement building. She must have jumped over a 5' wall. Once she was out, you couldn't even get in the same field with her before she headed for the ridges. In the 3 weeks or so she was out I'll bet she tore up 1/2 ac. of corn. Borrowed a tranquilizer gun from a neighbor who raised bison. Found where she bedded and waited on her. Hit her with 2 darts of WHAMPUM in the ham, which barely slowed her down and really made her aggressive. Ended up catching her there a couple days later with the .30-06. No fun and no pork in the freezer (because of the drugs in the meat), just wasted time, sweat and loss of a good animal. I'm glad we don't have a feral hog problem but I'd still like to hunt then sometime.

As far as the choke tubes go, I believe that's the way to go, especially if you want to shorten up a barrel. A few years back I found Mike Orlen from Mass. on Shotgunworld.com  forum. I do my own gun cobbling but couldn't justify the cost of the tooling just to do the few barrels I felt I'd need to alter. He offered discounts on gunsmithing to members of that forum. He advertised installation of choke tubes for $35 or so. Local 'smiths were charging almost twice that. I sent 2 barrels out to him, got quick service and found after patterning, that POI didn't change. I'm going to send a Savage M/24 out to him when I get done playing with cast loads in it. You guys might check him out. I had mine threaded for Remington tubes - a darn sight cheaper than NEF wanted for replacements and they have a rifled tube available as well. Just a thought...

STUMPJMPR,
I see where you and Joe S. both made shorties out of your shotguns! Did you have any problem with your barrels shooting high after they had been cut back? I have a Marlin Goose Gun that I want to cut back the barrel back to about 26".

Streak,

I have sights on mine so I'm not real sure.  I did know the sight height I calculated seemed to be shooting real high.  I had to bottom out the rear ramp to get it to shoot on target.

Streak, if it's a 36" barrelled goose gun you could sell it for enough to buy 3 pardners or Toppers. I've been watching them off and on on the auction sites for a couple years.

10-4 on the bolt action goose gun, there was beatup one in the local gun shop last summer and the asking was $325.  Someone bought it but not sure what the sale $$$$ was.  I had one in the 1970s and shot some #4 buckshot out of it.  Decided to sell it after that experience.  They made a 10 ga also, bet that would work fine on them MS swamp rats!  Speaking of shorty shotguns, there is a guy on the big auction site selling a 18" 12 ga USH.

Goose guns are worth 2x-3x what regular old 28" Model 55's are. Seen GG for $250+. There is a regular 55 at a local shop. $80 and gathering dust. A mag is $30-50.

My dad has the 10ga, I think its called a super goose 10, or something, I think its actually a sears branded gun, not sure.
Its so dang long that we cant keep it in any of the cabinets, so it hangs on the wall at the hunting shack, or leaning in a corner.

Super fun to shoot! makes ya feel like youre shooting artillary and incoming aircraft!  ;D
