Deee...at least "duck tape" on a bayonet....you MUST keep on topic!

How about a bayonet on the end of a freshly charged M4? Insurance. Am I back on topic? ;)

See! Now this makes sense, or as much sense as anything else considered. I'm sure that drdoug meant well when suggesting duck taping a bayonet to my 3030 but really. How would that look to other professional hog slayers? This type of temporary engineering works great on windshields at a NASCAR race, but we as professional hunters are better than that. I don't judge drdoug too harshly on his suggestion, but encourage him to put a little more thought into his endeavors. It would make us all look better in the future. Duck tape indeed. ???

do you use dogs?....and the original poster wanted to know what kind of a knife is best.

Yes I hunt with dogs, as for knives any knife with a resonably straight blade 5 to 7 inches will get the job done providing you do your part. Just as important as the blade is a good handle that won't allow your hand to slip on to the blade.

I have some Okie friends who run them down on horses and drop a loop on them, then run down the rope and stab them.  They wear leather chaps, and told me it was easy as pie and safe.  One of them had to give the sport up for a while when a big old boar ran back UP the rope and removed his chaps whilst he was busy stabbing him.  The boar also removed quite a bit of meat from his calf.

My folks have been on this continent a while.  Some for thousands of years, some who came over in 1635.  Within a few years my older relatives put their stone knives and arrows away and bartered for guns.  I think they were smart folks................ ;D

Anyone ever read “The Legend of Ben Lilly?”  He was quite an interesting character who allegedly took a large number of bear with a knife.  He was known for tracking bear and lions for hundreds of miles, then killing them.  This is a link to a short brief on his life, quite interesting…………..

It can be a tad exciting, I did it for a few years, got bored with hunting with firearms, and bows, had a knife built for me in South America, but itis just because I like the maker and his blade design.

A true Bowie would be a waste of time, they are fighting knifes, those styled close but with a heavier blade, and I prefer a slight up sweep do better
IMO a longer blade is better, 6" is just on the bitter edge of no good, mine is 13".

The guys I used to hunt with used Dogo's and pit/boxer mixes for catch dogs. All wore collars and chest plates, chasing them through the swamps and keeping up with the dogs is a blast, first couple of times I had to ask myself ,if I had lost my mind, never took one over about 200 on the hoof most where in the 100-125 area.Hope the dog holds on good slip up grab the hind legs flip'em and step in and stab up and under the shoulder and plate into the heart lung area, never worried about the blood it washes off,and they make great BBQ  ;D

The guys here catch them after the dog has them by the ear.  Its just not my cup of tea.  I have seen some dogs that were pretty much butchered by hogs.

I have a friend who raises pigs and slaughters them with a knife. He uses a double edged knife with a 6 inch blade. I would try Cold Steel knife company they make a quality product. Now for a funny story, this same guy shot a deer and tried to cut it's throat. It kicked him in the balls with it's hind foot. His family jewels swelled up like a grapefruit!

Hey I love duct tape too drdoug, but it has it's place. It's fine for patching tears in parachutes, or leaking brake lines on a car, but guns? Come on. ::)

Well Kently45 and I went hunting Saturday with a knife.  We had a grand Ole time and only a few of the dogs got hurt but more importantly only 3 hogs got dead.  We had such a good time we booked another hunt in May.

Hey Kently45 you left some toiletries here.  I will bring them home in a couple weeks with your big green cooler.

The knife I have seen used is called a "pig sticker" oddly enough!  It has a long slender strong blade, you really have to drive it hard to get it to the boiler room. I always stood back and watched with a 44 mag incase things went south!

I saw an ad recently for a hog knife called the Baconmaker that looked pretty cool. 8)
