Ithaca/SKB 200E 20ga
« on: February 28, 2010, 03:09:08 PM »
I go a 20ga sxs ithaca/SKB 200E shotgun from a family member.  I am not familiar with sxs guns as I have never owned one before.  The gun looks great and I like to take it out and try it.  However I noticed a rattle when I was handling it.  I can hear something like a screw or spring lose in the stock side of the action when I shake the gun.  Seems to be rolling around in there.  Took the butt plate apart and nothing in the stock.  Looks like it is in the box action/trigger assembly.

Any idea what this could be?  I will take it to a gunsmith but just want to get an idea of what I should expect.

I took the 3 screws on the bottom of the receiver out but it doesn't seem to release the trigger assembly.  Is there a disassembly procedure or diagram out there that I can get for this gun?  Like to take it apart without screwing up anything.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

That's exactly what NOT to do, and most likely the source of the rattle, when someone else before you tried the same thing - unless the safety spring's gone sprong.

Unless some has a lot of experience with SxS shotguns, the most that should be done is to pull the buttstock for a clean/flush/oil.

Please take it to a gunsmith.

Don't have my book here but have to agree with ranger44. Removing screws with no knowlesge of what is released is NOT a great idea. With the buttstock off one should be able to see whats going on inside.. Regardless I'd lean toward invloving a good gunsmith in this problem. The SKB shotguns are well made but I've not had a lot of involvement with the SxS guns, mostly the OU varieties..

We got into this one when we re stocked it .. Seems like I remember pins with "C clip" retainers on the ends of them, rather than being staked. Could be one of those rattling around in there.

And yes, take it to a gunsmith.   Good luck.
