Currently you need many times the amount of money to open a factory anywhere in the US compared to anywhere in Mexico. You'd have to reduce local costs, i.e. facilities, utilities, salaries, benefits. And you'd have to get the vendors who supply your parts/materials to do the same. And you have to deregulate something depending on the product, like emissions or some other government restriction.

Honestly, I think the smart money is going to be in food, water & renewable energy, at least that's where some big money is moving.

Manufacturing started leaving 30 years ago. Google NAFTA. Introduced and fast tracked by Bush 1 and signed by Clinton.

first let's start with any "American" Company that has a larger footprint overseas than in the U.S. does not qualify for Tax breaks in the U.S Close this loophole!!!! 2nd for those that stay American based offer them tax incentives to remain. Black and Decker tried this a few years ago , they wanted their cake and eat it too. And IBM is well on their way to moving large portions of their Services overseas as well. (not just call centers). they have minimal hiring tickets in U.S. yet are opening Hubs in Kuala Lumper, Budapest, and Latin America and training thousands.  Aand Obama knows this , the IBM CEO met with Obama a few weeks after he was inaugurated , and stated we are on board with saving the american worker. This was the same week they announced the new hubs.  Yeah these companies have the american worker in mind all right.

BTW  -  Wall -Mart is one of the fastest growing chains in China. and their China overseas operations is going to surpass North
American operations very soon in growth.

______________________________________

NEW YORK - U.S. corporations are picking up the pace in shifting well-paid technology jobs to India, China and other low-cost centers, but they are keeping quiet for fear of a backlash, industry professionals said. Jack Trout Morgan Stanley estimates the number of U.S. jobs outsourced to India will double to about 150,000 in the next three years. Analysts predict as many as two million U.S. white-collar jobs such as programmers, software engineers and applications designers will shift to low cost centers by 2014.

But the biggest companies looking to "offshoring" to cut costs, such as Microsoft Corp. , International Business Machines Corp. and AT&T Wireless, are reluctant to attract attention for political reasons, observers said this week. "The problem is that companies aren't sure if it's politically correct to talk about it," said Jack Trout, a principal of Trout & Partners, a marketing and strategy firm. "Nobody has come up with a way to spin it in a positive way." This causes a problem for publicly traded companies, which would ordinarily brag about cost savings to investors. Instead, they send vague signals that they are opening up operations in India and China, but often decline to elaborate.

Moreover, on the threshold of a U.S. presidential election year, job losses are a hot button issue. A company that highlighted a major job transfer could wind up in the campaign debate. Multinationals find that when they trumpet expansion overseas, they cause problems at home. When Accenture Ltd. executives in India this month announced plans to double their staff to 10,000 next year, they triggered a flood of calls to the company's U.S. offices about U.S. job losses.

Offshoring companies "are paying Chinese wages and selling at U.S. prices," said Alan Tonelson, of the U.S. Business and Industrial Council, a trade group for small business. "They're not creating better living standards for America." The U.S. sales director for one of India's top computer services providers said his company has won business from customers such as Walt Disney Co., Time Warner Inc.'s CNN and the Fox division of News Corp. -- none of which want public disclosure.

In India, some technology companies have recently adopted lower profiles. Microsoft Corp. has been removing its name from minibuses used to ferry engineers on overnight shifts. Major Indian beneficiaries of U.S. business such as Infosys Technologies Ltd., Wipro Ltd. and Satyam Computer Services Ltd. have stopped identifying new customers. While there have been reports that IBM intends to ship 4,700 high-end jobs to India and China next year, they mark a rare instance when figures "have been reported in black and white," said Linda Guyer, president of Alliance@IBM, a union that has tried to organize IBM employees. Those numbers were not released by IBM, but rather disclosed by the Wall Street Journal, which had obtained an internal memo. The company has declined to comment. Only reason America found out was through an anonymous inside whistle blower.

Guyer believes as many as 40,000 of IBM's 160,000 U.S. jobs will be transferred overseas by 2005, a figure she says was gathered from phone calls by IBM employees. Previously, IBM has pointed to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute that concludes the U.S. economy ultimately will benefit. The report was commissioned by Nasscom, a group made up of Indian tech companies as well as IBM's Indian services unit -- showing an effort by those invested in offshoring to sway public opinion. Anyone drinking this Kool-aid??

Recently, AT&T Wireless told the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission that it would lay off 1,900 employees this year. Communications Workers of America members obtained an internal memo prepared by Tata Consultancy Services of India that discussed how it would assume those U.S. jobs. Subsequently, AT&T Wireless officials acknowledged it was exploring the job shifts but didn't offer details.

While some companies, such as Electronic Data Systems Corp., CAP Gemini Ernst & Young and Sapient Corp., acknowledge they shift jobs abroad to exploit cost advantages and around-the-clock work, IBM asserts that it is not moving jobs but creating new ones. (Bullsh!@#) Reuters Ltd.

Instead of huge layoffs they just stop hiring in U.S. and deplete the American worker through attrition.

Since NAFTA Alabama has pulled in three major auto manufacturers who now have plants here and employ tens of thousands of Alabamians. Honda was first and is within about 30 miles of my home. Their impact is far far greater than just the folks they employ as there are all sorts of other business and factories that have popped up to service their needs.

Tuscaloosa got a Mercedes plant and I think it was Hyundai that built down around Montgomery somewhere.

The state and local governments gave lots of incentives in the form of lower taxes and even bought the land for them to build on and perhaps guranteed loans I'm not sure what all was done but it sure put a lot of folks to work in the state. It proves it can be done and manufacturing can be saved but it can't be done in union factories.

Don't assume because they are not union they are not well taken care of as the folks working at each are some of the highest paid folks in the whole area.

1000% import tax you want to sell it here you make it here or it wont sell at the price you'll need to pay for the import. We are the worlds consumer and if you can't sell it here you'll go out of business. Yep go were you can pay a buck an hour wages to make your product now try to sell it there.

What is the difference in buying something made out of the states owned by an American company or buying something made in the states owned by a company in another country?

I know with Caterpillar Tractor they had to move some of the operation off shore to compete. As a large percentage of their equipment now goes off shore.

Adding a tax on what is brought back into the states by a American owned company is only hurting the folks in the US.

1. Reduce or even eliminate corporate taxes for US manufacturing facilities.  As noted elsewhere on this forum corporate taxes are just an expence passed on to us the consumer anyway in the form of higher prices.

2. Impose heavy taxes on all imported goods from all companies, American or foreign.

I think these two would be a good start.

Shootall, ditto on everything but the elimination of OSHA.  I've worked in shops that were pretty dangerous.  I totally agree that OSHA is WAY out of control, but we do need some standards (boy it is hard for me to say that).

Buy American made products when possible. I know its impossible to buy everything American mde , but at least make an effort. As far as foriegn cars made in the USA. At least they,re built here by Americans. When you find out a product that you buy alot of is made overseas. Stop buying it. It happened to me last week. Ive been shooting Carbon exspress arrows for a couple years now. Went to buy a dozen. Made in Korea. I didnt buy them. Went home & emailed the company. Told them , I wont be buying their product anymore. Easton & Beaman arrows are made in the USA.  Will it change anything. maybe not. But it cant hurt. In my opinion this issue is something that we get to vote on every day. With our hard earned dollar. Redfield scopes. An affordable scope made in the USA. Support them. I know this wont fix the problem completly , but maybe it will save a job or 2.

Get rid of the EPA! The EPA has sent more business’s over seas than any other rules out there.  The one's that didn't go over sea's just  went belly up trying to comply.

Well...then they can build it here like Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota.
..TM7

And create a bunch of jobs for American workers.  What is wrong with that?  Sounds good to me.

You want to put a handle on HC cost... easy it's called tort reform.  Place some reasonable limits on medical malpractice suites and HC cost will come down substantially.   But of course we all know this will never happen because the greedy lawyers would stand to loose to much money.

When everybodys ideas start to slow down, I'm going to put the key opinions, everybody's, into a summary post.  Then, I'm going to bring it to my next Congressional townhall and ask why we don't do some of these things.

Open up mining and resource development here in the US.  We have closed the mines and forced manufactors to move overseas where the raw materials are.  With todays technology, our resources can be developed with out the polution problems of the past.

No one wants a mine in their back yard, but do you want a job?

Skarke , when i started work in 1971 a year after OSHA was started i was issued a hard hat and told to put it on if i saw an OSHA inspector . I have worked construction ever since . I have had trenches cave in ( one almost got me ,I was 13 foot in the ground no trench support . Many other times we "got away with it " . Had one crane turn over and several others almot turn over due to poor conditiond under the out riggers ( once was a weal tunnel gave way ) . Had ladders set up wrong , scaffolds tip , stages for concrete forms fall when 300 yards of concrete was placed on it 34 went to hospital , Have you ever worked a pan job accidents are a given . I have to be checked from time to time because of asbestos exposure from years ago .So when you say you don't agree i understand but note i said limit them . What i would like to see is all workers could be fined if the company provides protection and they don't use it . Now its a system where the company pays period .

You start by taking the politicians/government out of the equation.  Political favors and excessive regulation have driven manufacturing out of this country.  Americans then have to make difficult decisions about moving forward.  Mainly it will be to rid ourselves of this entitlement mentality.

Make it impossible for companies that move outside the country to import their products or do any business inside the country without it costing as much as if Made in America. Make it here, sell it here or export. Make it elsewhere, sell it here with a tax or tarrif equal to what American manufacturing would be, or keep it outside. Cut taxes for companies that hire American workers in America. Require companies that have service call-in locations overseas to move them back to America(so we can understand, hopefully, what they are telling us.) Stop being so concerned about global presence and concentrate on interstate commerce.

Tariffs will only make the things we buy so expensive we can't afford to buy anything.  They will also allow US manuf. to continue to produce junk.

I don't think there is any way to keep manufacturing in the U.S. until foreign workers unionize.  Rising foreign labor costs, the continued decline of unions in the U. S and the resulting lower U.S. wages,  will bring manufacturing back here.  Manufacturing will move to wherever cost is the lowest.

Use natural gas as a vehicle fuel, and use diesel more.  Both would almost eliminate imported oil and bring jobs back here in energy production.  Use coal for synthetic oil and gas.  Build more nuclear power plants.  Stop importing food that can be grown here.  Have all governments, feds, state, and local buy only American made products, no imports.  If no American made exists, give companies responsible 5 years to get factories back here.

This would create the need for more big government to oversee and enforce this regulation on American companies.

Why not eliminate OSHA?  We wouldn't be taxed to pay for the expense of this organization and companies wouldn't be forced to spend money to follow government regulations.  This would cut the cost of manufacturing in the U.S.
